Shaving. Guys, yes or no?

And to what extent? Personally, I go all the way. I’m talking about circling the hole. I just shed the winter pelt today as my first race is tomorrow. So what about it dudes, yes or no?

Yeah, kinda have to. I’m not a big fan of chafing. LoL
I pretty much do everything but the arms/chest/back. It just feels better. I guess I get a psychological advantage somehow as well?

Agreed. There is a psychological advantage beyond the pleasing aesthetic.

Pretty much everything but my arms (chest included) - but I’m not very hairy
.

Yesterday I shaved for the first time since high school swim season which was a decade or so ago. Today when I was running I swear everyone was looking at me and wondering why the hell I had shaved my legs. Oh well, I guess that beats road rash recovery.

“Waist of time” according to Andy Potts.
I was in MIT Tri last weekend, and I asked Andy why he doesn’t shave his legs, and this was what he said.
He was 1st out of the water, as always !

waist down, if nothing else the ladies like it
.

Nope. I used to do the full body shaving thing for swimming, but I would always get horrible razor burn on my thighs. I would probably shave if I could find a way to avoid the burn, but since I haven’t been able to find a way, I’m avoiding shaving my legs anymore.
I just plan on not crashing.

god no. if after a crash the worst thing I have to worry about is hairy leg road rash, I’ll count myself lucky.

Shaving makes me look more vascular, so yes
.

yes I do, but I don’t circle the hole.

I like Nair for men. It seems to work well and I get no adverse effects.

Just heed the label warnings to not use on your genitals. Trust me on this one.

I wonder if Potts has discussed his pov with any womens

Speaking of MIT, didn’t they find out that it is faster on the bike if you don’t shave in their windtunnel. Sort of like dimples on the golf ball, the hair trips the boundary layer.

So shaving slows you down but speeds up recovery after crashes.

Nope. I used to but just stopped after a while. As I got older, just seemed like too much trouble.

Ahhh, the cycling classics, the Masters, a robin and the first shaving thread on ST.

My favorite signs that spring is here…

And yeah, up to mid-thigh only. I’m pretty much naturally “aero” as factory equipped, so the rest of the parts (arms, chest, etc.) aren’t a problem.
May not be any faster, but it’s a clean look (and shows off the biker legs).

Brad

I’ve been to many meetings/races/events and hear guys go on and on about how it’s a preventative measure in case they crash…blah blah blah. Come on, just admit that you like the way it shows off the muscles in your legs…and even more, it gets noticed by people who will ask you why you shave. Then you get to tell them about your cycling or triathlon adventures.

I’ve been shaving for 6yrs from the abs on down. I like the way it looks. I like the way it feels. And my smooth legs are always the last line to any “trash talk” session with my friends. “Whatever dude…you shave your legs…ya homo.” Yep…I sure do…now pass me a beer Chewbacca.

Shaving is nice in a crash. A much cleaner wound to pick stuff out of. Do you crash often?
In my 28 years of triathlons, I have crashed twice where it “may” have been nice to have been shaved.
If you want to look like every one else and show off the muscles- go for it! Some of the ladies like it, I hear. I am old (53) and married with a wife that thinks it looks sily- on me.
A waste of time in my book. I know I am in the minority on this topic.

Shaving really does cut down on the after crash wound care.
I was in an accident and had to use a wound-vac, which entails putting a huge piece of tape on your leg and than change it every other day.

While I was in the hospital, I didn’t have hair on my legs and changing the tape was easy.
When I got home, the leg hair started to grow back and ripping the tape off the leg was terrible. I had to double the dose of vicodin to get through the procedure.
(Unfortunately, the doubling up on the meds essentially didn’t allow me to think clearly, and thus, I never thought to shave my leg again. If I had been thinking clearly, I would have shaved and probably not needed the extra meds).

So, shaving really does cut down on the wound care.
However, how often do you really crash and really need to pick rocks out of a wound or worry about changing a wound-vac?

With all that said, I shave.

I’ve never crashed in a triathlon, and I can’t remember crashing “tri training”. Crash plenty in road races, crits and most always during a cyclocross race!
