Shallow Rim with Cover vs. Flo 90 vs. Flo 90 with Cover

How would you rank these for a flat to rolling course? The Flo 90 would be a purchase. I will probably get a wheel cover either way. Shallow rim wheel is a Vittoria Session. Wheelbuilder data shows that putting a wheel cover on a Zipp 808 makes it faster but I can’t find anything that compares a shallow rim with cover to a wheel like the 808 or Flo 90 without a cover.

Go look at the FLO page and note the difference between the 90 and the disk.

Prepare to be underwhelmed (which is not a zing to FLO). I own the 60/90 combo.

I’d buy a disc.

What the other guy said, Flo disc is basically a Flo 90 with a permanent cover. I have a 60/90 combo and just put a cover on the rear for an upcoming race. It’s small but no different install than a shallow wheel. I have not tested a cover vs no cover test yet though. However, my granny gear rubs slightly on this setup and it didn’t with my old Altair 52.

Aerodynamically, it’s going to be like splitting hairs. But one thing I will point out, putting a wheelcover on a shallow rim is a major PITA vs a deep wheel. If you want to get a cover with no rivets, good luck taping it on, when all you really have is the brake surface for it to grab.

Agree. I was worried about that a few years back when I got my cover, because I wanted it with no holes or outer lip. My forte titan is 27mm deep and it works great, although the tape does take up the entire “rim” up to the brake track, with half of the 3m tape on the cover, and half on the rim. I think to remove the “lip”, it must be at least 25mm deep.

On the inside I duct-taped the hell out of it (spokes to inside ds cover) and there are absolutely no waves and no rub. But it took like 2 hours to get it completely the way I wanted it. Haven’t taken it off since.
