At no point in my life, regardless of my training status, has my desire or libido been the limiting factor in the amount of action I get/ have gotten.
Id like to say my sex life is decreased due to my Triathlon training (Im ready whenever the wind blows) but its more due to the fact I have been married 21 years and my wife is not a rabbit like she was when we were first dating long long long time ago…
I’m 42 and recently married a 21 year old. No problems here.
LIKE A BOSS! I am sure my sex drive would fire back up here.
54 and train 10-17 hrs a week depending on the time of year and my wife still says I want it to much!
I’m in my 20’s and I’d still rather train then dedicate time to the pursuit of sex.
In my later 20’s now, been in the sport for about 5 years, have definitely noticed a major reduction in my preoccupation over sex. Of course I’d expect that to some extent even if I wasn’t training simply as a byproduct of maturing.
Either way, basically I have no desire to go out and party anymore. My only real motivation to do that was to try and pick up chicks, and that pursuit is unsuccessful most often, so the result is you just still go home alone, but at 2am, having spent a bunch of money, then sleep in and feel like garbage the next day.
Given the choice to get a good night of sleep, head out early and get a good ride, and generally just feel good both physically and about myself, why the hell would I ever want to go out again.
Now, when a source is more accessible, I’ll still find myself screwing my training up by staying up too late or doing annoying stuff like spending time with other people… but my training schedule is often in the back of my mind, reminding me that I could be sleeping right now, and thinking about how this might impact my plans for tomorrow.
Yeah. It’s pretty healthy.
29 here. Couldn’t have said it better myself.
OK, let’s have some fun with this interesting topic!
I visited the Doctor for a full physical (53 years old). I told him I am an avid triathlete, 4 time Ironman, and workout 2x a day 6 days a week, lifetime athlete. During my active training periods, I notice a fair reduction in sex drive. I took 3 months off (Oct/Nov/Dec) from active training, and noticed my sex drive increased a lot. I got back to training in January, and by Feb (when I visited him), I noticed my drive reduced again. Hmmmm…
I asked him to test my testosterone, thinking I may have low T. It came in at 910! The low is 250 and high is 950. So no low T for me!
I asked him why the reduced drive if my T was high, and he told me this is very common amongst ultra endurance athletes, and triathletes in general, and that he heas heard this many times. Hmmm… He said I should ask my friends if they see the same thing, and he said that he would bet they would. I wont talk to my buddies about this, but in the anonymity of Slowtwitch, what the hell!?! ![]()
So guys, and gals, do any of you experience what I seem to experience? Any Tri Docs have a weigh in on this? Go ahead gang, tell the truth! ![]()

I actually find the reverse to be true, i.e., the more tired I am, the more I want it:)
More importantly, my WIFE’s libido only raises when I am not too tired to do the dishes, regardless of my training volume.

Isn’t that like paying for sex?

OK, I’ve noticed the same thing (married 20 years this year). WTF is up with that? I do housework/chores and then she is turned on?

I think that this is a form of masturbation that we can’t avoid. Could be the reason for the decreased sex drive.

Isn’t everything?
(I wanted to say, “Nope, I save that for YOUR wife,” but I thought that may be a little out of line to someone I don’t know ;-))
I’m probably a terrible example but maybe I’ll inspire some other women to post.
When I was married and training for Ironman, I was so stupid tired it took some convincing to get me in the mood. Once I stopped training 15+ hours a week and got regular sleep I was back on track.
I’m training regularly again, running 45 - 50 MPW and 18 months after my marriage ended I’d still rather sleep and enjoy watching whatever movie I want. Going for a run and sleeping in is far more compelling than looking for nooky. Bar scene has never been my thing and normal dating is too much work. So, I’m training enough to be too tired to deal with the dating BS and sex drive is lowest its been in as long as I can remember. And I’m cool with it.

Aw you should have
.
My libido has done nothing but increase since I started doing triathlons, and I wasn’t out of shape or overweight before then. Of course I got divorced (a much, much needed thing) about the same time I started triathlon training and found the woman of my dreams so that may have something to do with it!!
A follow up question would be: how many of those with the decreased libidos think it’s due to training or a partner/relationship that is suffering for one reason or another?

I think you’re hot for your 53 yr old doc.

There is no f’in way I would want to be married to a 21tr old, no matter how good looking…anyone applauding that must not be to old…the drama of 21 yr olds…arghhh
HAHA…I second there…been there and done the 21 y/o girl thing and its a headache. I wish him the best of luck. “No matter how young and beautiful she is…someone…somewhere is sick of her shit!”
And on the sex-drive note: I have read in the past(actual Physiology Journals…not magazines)…that Higher intensity training stimulates T…especially HIT involving the glutes and thighs. I believe it was more specifically describing weight lifting(squats and cleans). It also described evidence that endurance sport and low intesity training(especially of the leg and glute region) had a tendency to “allow T to drop”. So I am sure there are many culprits to the decreased sex drive…but this seems perfectly plausible. Especially since I have been experimenting myself. If i go a few weeks of HIT training and target my thighs more…then my drive seems to increase. It is the opposite if I do long and low intensity training. Just a thought.
I also wonder how much of it(decreased sex drive) has to do with mental Focus on a goal. As athletes we are very goal oriented and focused…and that drive to improve, win, or whatever it may be…just occupies a little bit of that Pie Chart that we call priorites. Just sayin

Yep,just don’t have the words to show how much I agree with you except to say…Never, ever, ever in holy hell would I have another relationship with someone half my age…That said,if one or two wanted to visit every now and then well…
