Richard Paradis, one of the 2 injured riders, unfortunately recently lost his job and the health insurance that came with it. His friends have started a webpage to collect donations to help cover medical costs: http://www.dickdime.info/index.html
Please don’t turn this thread into a debate about health care, but responses are appreciated just to let Dick know we are thinking of him, and bumping the post to increase it’s visibility is always helpful. If you have a few bucks laying around, then please donate to help out. If you don’t have any spare money, or don’t want to donate, then please at least send good thoughts and prayers.
Thoughts and prayers are going out to him. What are his injuries? How is his recovery looking?
Hopefully the motorist had insurance and will be held responsible.
I have made this comment on here before and not received any positive feedback, but I think that it is time to start thinking about increasing the protective clothing that we wear on training rides. I know we are all about being aero and light but on training rides it might be worth wearing some sort of light, carbon protective vest…doesn’t help with head trauma but it may help with things such a fractured ribs and punctured lungs. It is just getting pretty scary out there…
The fact of the matter however is that even if he did have insurance from an employer this would not be their liability and would instead be the liability of the driver. I think we can all sleep easy knowing that the drivers car insurance will handle the bills.
Insurance is there to deal with unavoidable situations…I am suggesting that we find some way to make these injuries avoidable. I am sure he would rather not be in the critical condition that he currently finds himself in rather than just dealing with the ultimate payment of medical expenses. This probably is very similar to the arguments that were had when helmets finally become acceptable forms of protection many years ago.
dude, nobody is going to ride around in a suit of armor when training, in the summer especially
if you can’t take risk, stay on the trainer.
don’t forget you are still going to die one day though.

This is probably not the thread to discuss this…but it does not have to be a suit of armor. And it is not just you that is taking the risk, if you bothered to visit the blog it said that he is a husband and a father. I am sure his children didn’t assume the risk…sometimes think beyond jackmott. I bet everyone said that no one was going to ride with a bucket on their head in the summer. If we can make bikes, entire bikes, weight as little as they do, I am sure that some carbon fiber pro can get a breathable vest that may HELP…is it ideal, no, but what’s the answer??? Doing nothing certainly is not the most logical response
my car insurance covers me for such accidents, I think I have it at 1mil or so
thats a bunch
if you lose yer legs, you should get some aero prosthetics
Would you let him race on the aero prosthetics or would you say they give him an unfair advantage over the competition and ban him?
Also, my thoughts and prayers are with the injured triathlete.
The answer is to accept mortality and quit being afraid.
and quit saying “Think of the children”
it sucks enough to get strange looks if I don’t wear a helmet to bike to the walgreens.
now I’m gonna get yeld at for not wearing my armor
fuck
