I am going to be in Myrtle Beach on our spring break (March 13 - 20) and noticed that Set-Up Inc. has a duathlon in Sanford, NC on March 14. I went to their web site and it is listed as a new this year. Anyone have experience racing in their series? Are the races well-organized? What is the typical level of competition (maybe I’m a little nervous since I haven’t ridden my bike outside since IMFL and that will likely be my first outdoor ride of 2004)? What is the terrain around Sanford like?
Anyone know if the Myrtle Beach area is any good for riding (I’m hoping … plus they usually don’t have snow there in March!)?
You will probably get a lot of responses to this one. Set-Up puts on very well run races. This is the first year for the March Mauler, but they have been putting on an early spring du for a long time. The areas around Sanford is rolling hills. This is a new course, but part of the bike is on their Duke 1/2 Iron race in the fall. The competition is pretty intense, but that time of the year is early for all of us so it isn’t too intensive. All in all I don’t think you will not be dissappointed with any race Set-Up puts on.

With your speed, what do you have to be nervous about?
Like Tim said Set-Up puts on very quality races. This first year Du is being out on with fit to be tried sports in Sanford. The level of competition is varied. If you want to get a feel of the level oc competition you can look at some of the race results from last years races. Each of this years races, that are not new, have the race results from last year on the individual race pages. On www.set-upinc.com if you pull down the menues of the varies series the races are all listed. Click on the races, then you will have links to the results.
Set-Up Inc. does most of the races in NC and SC. They have also started to handle some races in MD, VA & GA. They do an excellent job with their races…very organized. The level of competition ranges from very good to newbies like myself. It’s a come one-come all sort of group. I think all levels are welcome, but you won’t find any pros out there (thank goodness). You should do the race; you will enjoy it. I have always found the atmosphere to be very positive and enjoyable.
Gotta go…time for my night-time run. (With a wife and two young children, I often find myself running around 10 or 11 at night. Ugh!!!)
Anyway, enjoy the race in Sanford (March Mauler)!!
