Sesamoid injury & Kansas 70.3 - Do I have a chance?

Grade 1 sesamoid injury (feels like I have a small rock under my big toe when I walk/run). Kansas 70.3 is Sunday, do I have a chance in finishing without doing serious damage. I’m taking NSAIDs and putting Voltaren on it but I’m not sure it’s going to be good to go by Sunday.

A couple of websites talk about using a J-shaped patch on the bottom of the affected foot but I can’t find a picture of what it looks like - anybody out there familiar.

Ideas?

You can run through it. Definitely use a J or donut hole pad to offload though. Even with, be wary of your gait change as you won’t want to load the great toe joint. Scrap your racing flats for something a little beefier until better as well. I’ll occasionally give a local steroid inj if an important/A race as that likely works better and has less side effects than your oral NSAID. Good luck!

I have a sesamoid fracture on my right foot. After resting for almost 2 months, using orthotics and high arc soles, the pain is virtually none.

Read this http://www.runtheplanet.com/trainingracing/injury/footinjuries-sesamoiditis.asp You can cut a small hole on the insole, exactly where the sesamoid bone touches the insole. Apparently, that reduce the contact of the bone and reduce the preassure/pain.

Hope it helps and get well soon.

Any ideas on where I can find a picture or diagram for a J pad and how it is applied?

Thanks a bunch.

simply put the sesamoid (usually the medial or tibial) one in the “crook” of the “J” with the straight part of the J lateral. Or - simply a circular donut hole under the sesamoid 1st MPJ to offload. Nothing more than that.

Ok, think I got it.

Thanks Doc, appreciate the help.
