"Sending my prayers" WTF

Saw this in the responses to a Facebook post regarding a major traffic snarl on Cape Cod yesterday, caused when a truck hit some scaffolding on the Sagamore Bridge. No injuries, but the bridge had to be closed for several hours to clear debris from the roadway.

“Sending my prayers?” Can a divine blessing really speed up repair work on scaffolding? Or ease heavy traffic?

Though I should admit that if there were a religion that could, say, provide a new bridge just by asking God, I’d probably convert right away. Might also want to require the people in the DOT to join it as well, first amendment be damned.

Get over it.

Seriously that’s all you’ve got? Someone let’s someone know that they are thinking of them and hoping for the best and this created a dilemma for you and got you on a anti religious kick?

If someone’s says bless you or praying for you take it as a compliment and someone being compassionate instead of over thinking it.

For you?

We are sending our love down the well.

Maybe I’m just jealous because nobody ever prays for all of my outpatient orders and insurance preauthorizations to be correct, or anything really thoughtful like that.

Seems similar to people praying for their sports team of choice. I would think an omnipotent being would have better things to do.

We all know it does not really work - God seems to hate the NFC South and love the Broncos.

Get over it.

No kidding.

Clearly you’re not posting all your problems on facebook enough, no one know you need their prayers.

I’m praying for you.

You made me think about you for 5 seconds which is pretty much the same thing. So, basically you’ve stolen a prayer from me.

Get over it.

No kidding.

I can’t get over it until the prayers make the bridge reopen. Or the DOT finishes up.

I’m praying for you.

~Matt

Would you mind specifically addressing in your prayers the fact that I’m out of milk? I’d be much obliged.

That is a given when I pray as my prayers are not only non deity specific but the antithesis of the golden rule. I do not pray “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, rather “Do unto others as they would have done unto themselves”. So my prayers go out to you via any god that will give you whatever you desire…so that carton of milk should be on it’s way

Jesus loves all the children of the world. what do you not understand?

The fact that said being is omnipotent means that they really don’t have anything better to do. Everything is beneath them.

This seems like one of those nice things people just say a lot of the time. I’m not sure how many of them are really sitting around praying, probably some.

But I do agree a traffic problem seems like an unusually minor disturbance in one’s life to get the “sending my prayer’s” sentiment.

I was thinking about that as I was typing. I’m at best agnostic, but when I asked my father one time if he really thought God cared about whether a particular football team won and he said ‘yes’ I found it rather absurd.

As a citizen of Denver, I’m fine with that. Though you’d think a team called the Saints would win all the time.

What about a polar snow bomb cataclysmic superstorm with a name like super winter snowstorm Damian that rolls around America every week or two. I think prayers are in order then.
