Due to various circumstances (all good…) looking to take a solo week training-break slash mental recharge at VERY short notice, i.e. starting next week. Normally do this in Penticton in the summer, but worked all summer and it’s waaay to cold for anything BC or even Washington to be fun now.
Where should I go this time of year on the west coast USA? Looking to ride 4 days out of 7, 4-6hrs, plus a run and a destination hike on 2 of the other days. Mix of road and gravel, somewhere airbnbs are practical.
Any recommendations?
Tucson?
Flagstaff?
Carlsbad?
Marin?
Palm Springs?
Sedona?
Vegas (I’ve heard Lake Mead and surrounding area is great, I don’t mean the strip…)
Somewhere south Oregon or Norcal, not sure if still wam?
Base out of SFO-ish and do Mount Tam, Bike Hut in Redmond, etc?
Open to recommendations, although doing my own research.
If you want to swim Sedona may be difficult. The pool may have already closed unless you swim with the team
You’d be able to do pretty wel in tuscon
A well trodden path there
Vegas near lake Mead has the River Mountain Loop trail. If I recall it’s a 60km bike path that loops out to lake Mead with an optional detour to hoover dam.
Lots of hiking, and gravel options too.
Sfo Bay Area is pricey but great for riding. Western wheelers has rides every day of the week and even if you are too strong you can go off the front and regroup so you’ll be riding with people on new routes ever day. Running good here too. Pools not as accessible but community pools can be used if nearby.
I went to Tucson in march for a bike camp and honestly I felt like it was a lot more fun and interesting to just have stayed home and ridden my routes here in NorCal compared to Tucson. Most of the folks there just wanted to escape snow but we barely get any here.
