Perhaps some of you more local to IM Lou can answer some or all of the following in regards to the IM Lou swim start.
From the athletes’ guide:
"The swim will be an in-water start just off the wharf. You will be called to the swim staging area beginning at 6:30 a.m. "
What sort of water depth/s and area is available for 2000+ athletes near the wharf? Will all 2000+ be able to stand in the water?
Is there any measurable current in that area of the river? Will 2000 plus perhaps non-wetsuited folks be treading water against
a slight current for 10 or 15 minutes?
How in the world might the race directors keep track of who is wearing and who isn’t wearing a wetsuit if temps are over 78 degrees?
Haven’t been there, so no clue on 1) and 2), but 3) is easy. Everyone has to walk across a timing mat somewhere on-shore to be checked in. It’ll be narrow right there, so you just have volunteers writing down numbers off of wristbands.
Don’t forget to add at 6:30 it will be dark sunrise is at
7:07 civil twighlight is 6:40(sun 6 degrees below horizon)
and moon sets at 4:49am so gonna be dark there as well.
It won’t be dark at 6:30. Well, somewhere it will be but not in Louisville.
Have you been in louisville recent days at sunrise to know this? I haven’t I’m just baseing this on civil twighlight which is defined as when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon… It’s same for sunset as well you do get some light for a while before the sunrises.
Can Anybody whos in louisville right now fill us in sunrise should be bit earlier than it will be aug 26.
What time do you get some light in the morning.
In the summer civil twighlight(I think) lasts longer in winter it’s very short…
Louisville is right on the western edge of eastern time zone which is good for sunset being later but the sunrise will be earlier time wise…
I live in memphis don’t get up early enough to tell you if its light that early or not.
So anyone from there get up at 6:30 tell us (has to be recent) how much light there is…
So maybe some time you should get up at 6:30 and evaluate the degree to which the predawn light is shining. Might be an eye opener.
Well when I get to louisville next week I will.
I’m in memphis sunrise is bit different being 300 miles west and in central timezone.
And from your profile your in hot springs so you can’t compare sunrise there to louisville and not in 9 days.
I’ll just get web cam pic from local web cam there on i-65 in the morning and see I guess in the morning(will automate that since I don’t get up until 8:00 or so.
Or Maybe I’ll just stay up extra 3 hours and see 5:30 memphis time 6:30 louisville time. I maybe sleep later but I stay up as well so my day is as full as those who go to bed at 8:00pm and get up at 4:00am
so whats your POINT…
My POINT once again is that it won’t be dark at 6:30 am. I don’t see how you can be so confused. Stay with me here.
Edit: And all this coming from a guy who admittedly hasn’t seen 0630 since I don’t know when.

Okay let me put it another way… My original post was based on sunset and civil twighlight times… Second post I then asked if anyone in louisville could tell us one way or another this week how much light there is at 6:30am
I don’t know one way or another what are you basing your information (are you in louisville now or have been last day or so or know someone there that knows)
You’ve not provided any information as to how you know there will be light at 6:30…
Just asking so if anybody knows for sure(guess I’ll get up at 5:30 am tommorrow and check(6:30am louisville time) the traffic cams…
Well I was there visitng family beginning of Aug, did some training & then did a sprint tri on the weekend which started at 6:45 am. It was like night time dark at 6 am when I arrived, did the check in & set up my bike stuff. I was beginning to wonder if it would be light by then. It was but it seems to me that it began to lighten up around 6:20 or so though the days will have gotten shorter over the 4 wks to race day.
Thanks that sounds about right I checked sunrise and civil twighlight for aug 4. shows sunrise at 6:48 twighlight at 6:19 which is close… So looks like it may be dark at 6:30 but around 6:40 start getting light.
SUN
Begin civil twilight 6:19 a.m.
Sunrise 6:48 a.m.
Sun transit 1:49 p.m.
Sunset 8:50 p.m.
End civil twilight 9:19 p.m.
MOON
Moonrise 11:23 p.m. on preceding day
Moon transit 6:09 a.m.
Moonset 1:07 p.m.
Moonrise 11:53 p.m.
Moonset 2:21 p.m. on following day
I watched a Louisville web cam this morning periodically from 5:00 until 7:30am.
The cars and trucks were still running with their lights on until ~ 7:15am.
There was very little light at 6:30am and things will be worse by 10 minutes of so on the 26th.
Farther south = less hours of daylight during the summer half of the year.

Thanks sounds like it will be dark at 6:30 as we go into the river…
Sorry looks like you haven’t gotten much on your original questions though…
From what I’ve read postings wise the dam at the locks up stream will be closed so current should be minimul so that probably answers your question. As to the depth I haven’t a clue… I have heard some spots close to shore you can bump into trees or logs or pier posts when the water is low. They said cutting the barge traffic at 6:15 then putting the outer bouys(upstream swim side)
out then so figure at least on the upstream side and side we start must be deep enough for barge traffic.
Good now I don’t have to get up in the morning to check sunrise maybe saturday will do that.
I’ve only been to Luavull once, so this is a 49% guess.
No. Although, I hate to say this, but at IM Moo, IM USA, IM AZ (all open water starts) there are folks who wait until after the gun on the shore and then let er rip. I wouldn’t try this…but just saying it happens.
Depends if locks are open or not. Judging from the rain in the forecast, it’s a possibilty…although unlikely (from what my friend in the Coast Guard says).
Have they even made an announcement about water temps? Anything under 80 equals 75 degrees in Ironman terms. As for knowing if something has a wetsuit or not…I guess we’ll all have to be honest.

I keep hearing ironman (wtc or NAS) are lax on water temps for wetsuits but at least in the races I’ve done I haven’t seen it.
Only been to wisconsin once though going to az this spring so can’t account for those.
Checking water temps for races I’ve done(that I still have polar heartrate data) here are water temps.
Only 2 of these races didn’t allow wetsuit(watertemp 80) is Hawaii of course…never have. but the ones I’ve done below all were wetsuits and well below the 78 temp. I always lap my polar watch at turns so can record temps at different points on the swim.
Not scientific but good guide…

no place to stand. You’re gonna be treading water for a bit. I can assure you ( I live in L’ville) the river will look like a lake- very little current as the dams above and below willbe closed.

6:33 this morning (just happened to be up 5:20 this morning with a bad cough So thought Hey why not check out
the weather cam see if its dark. Looks dark to me hint of light starting some of it just city lights.
Civil twighlight today was 6:31 so this is about that time… 6:59 sunrise.
By time sunday rolls around adjust that to 6:40 ct and 7:07 So verdict is in it will be dark at 6:30 when we start
entering the water…
