I am doing the American Triple-T this week. What should (need) I bring, relative to what HFP provides, in terms of food, bedding, and such? e.g., should I bring everything I might need - food, sleeping bag, pillow, towels, utensils, etc., or does HFP provide some of these things? Does HFP provide dinner only, or all meals?
I did the Sunday (‘Little Smokies’) HIM last year so I have some familiarity with the course and need to pace conservatively. If you are going, I look forward to seeing you there!
I did not race this, but I was there for the weekend last year with someone who did. Bring all of the food you want during the race and in between races. HFP does a great job with post race food for everyone, but don’t count on it as it may not work for you. There is a meal on Saturday night I know and I think Friday as well. There is a little cafe at the main lodge but the food is not very good or appropriate for that matter. Bring a few towels and your sleeping bag to put on top of your bed. The cabin facilities are nice -rustic, but they are meant to be camp like- but you will need to be responsible for pretty much everything. They have mini kitchens so you can cook if you want to.
Good luck, this is such a neat race in beautiful surroundings. The hills might kick your butt, but try to enjoy every moment of it!!
Ken, we are the race drink. You should be all set for drink. I think shannon will have gels and other stuff like pretzels for the run course. Last year they had chips that got soaked in the rain :).
I did Triple T in 2002. I skipped the meals provided as the food was very average. We also had a large group so the meals were planned ahead of time.
It was a great time to test recovery drinks and different fuels. TTT was the first time that I used Hammer’s Sustained Energy and Hammer gel. The stuff saved me.
You’ll want to bring sleeping and cooking gear along with a full compliment of food options. There were basic utensils in the cabins.
If you have a good bike mechanic buddy I’d ask him/her to come along. Seems like we were constanly tweaking our bikes. A few guys crashed and required a good “wrench”.
If you swam in the same water during the Little Smokies race then your immune system should be fine. If not, get your shots and get out of the water as fast as possible. IMO, 3-Mile island has got nothing on that TTTswamp we swm in.
