Seek advice selecting an Eastern Region Director

I finally got my election package yesterday, and was amazed to see five people I’ve never heard of before who want to run for the Director post. Given that the platform statements are all pretty standard and similar, I’d appreciate input wither from the candidates themselves or from anybody who can offer information about the candidates.

Thanks!

I picked Robert Pozo because I’ve done a few of his races and because he supports the local kids races. Nice guy.

Making it worse, several of the Eastern candidates said so many of the same things!

Without naming names, I followed an elimination process like this:

-Are there ANY elements of what I read in their platform statements that I disagree with? Bye Bye.

-Does their background and/or history relative to triathlon fit my idea of the right kind of new blood on the board? For example (tho this is not necessarily a criterion I used): much forum debate has centered on whether or not board members who are also Race Directors have an inherent conflict of interest. If I agreed that they do, I’d eliminate past/present RD candidate(s) on that basis.

-Assuming there is more than one person left after the above, are there any elements of their platform statements that I strongly approve of and which the other(s) don’t mention?

That’s all I needed.

The platform statements were limited to 300 words. That makes it hard to say much. All candidates are attempting to get votes, so are saying what they think members want to hear.

I’m running for the board from the eastern region. I’m NOT a race director. nothing against them and especially if they do more than conduct races. I personally feel there is a conflict of interest in a race director sitting on the bod. They can influence their personal income.

I am for regular input via surveys, interview and open communication channels from the members I represent. My platform was written as a member - these are the things I feel as a member are needed to make me (as a member) feel better about my organization:

transparency - no behind closed door wheeling and dealing, make the purpose and reason for everything the board does clear and available to all members.

changes to the by laws need to continue. It is untypical to propose sweeping changes to by laws in a single proposal and vote. But, I do agree with Dan and Lew’s proposal - as a necessary immediate step and as a starting point. If there are things you don’t like about it, but the intent and general sense of the proposal is acceptable, vote for it and then get involved to make further changes. If I’m elected, e-mail me and let me know your ideas and desired changes.

do you know all of the programs, their intent and how they effect you? Are you happy with not knowing those things? I’m not and I want to change that.

I personally think a 2 year term is important. But, if i hear from members that that is not what they want, I’ll will support their opinion. My opinions will be voiced and shared, but my actions will be driven by those members of the eastern region I represent. There is no way you can know everything about me and my opinions, nor is there any way I can know everything about you (members) and your opinions. UNLESS we communicate, share and listen to each other.

I am not running for myself, I amy running for the Easter Region members.

Thanks for the reply. It’s nice to be able to identify the candidates as real people and interact with them before making a decision.

I don’t live in the East Region, so I can’t vote for anyone there, but I’ve met a few of the candidates and I think Dave and Robert would both do a nice job. They’re both good guys.
