Security camera footage of guy trying to get into my house

http://youtu.be/JWSygzMYFLI

My wife and I were both out of town when this happened. The freaky thing is that it was a last-minute decision for her to stay an extra night with me - original plan was that she was going to come home a day early, and would have been home alone when this happened.

I’m pretty sure that the guy is just drunk or high, and has gotten the wrong house (either that, or he’s a zombie in search of human flesh). Just the same, if the door had been unlocked, he would have walked right into the house. I talked to the cops, and the officer said that they do occasionally arrest drunks who get into wrong houses, especially in houses like mine that are in town and on the streets leading away from the bars.

Pretty unsettling. We’re going to be much more careful about keeping the door locked now.

Just curious, how did you know to look on the video - do you look at the video when you return from a trip? Have you had incidents that made you start doing this?

Not implying anything, just genuinely curious.

I have apps on my phone and my iPad that allow me to review the recordings remotely. I can watch in real time, or I can check the logs for motion detection. In this case, I was scrolling through the logs the following morning and saw a bunch of activity on the porch camera.

Yikes. Looked drunk/high and mentally ill.

Luckily that wasn’t Forge’s house otherwise we’d be discussing our first LR homicide.

Was he ringing the doorbell at first? I like that he looks like he’s having a full on conversation with nobody.

“Why won’t my door open, Randy?”

“Of course it’s my house. Don’t you think I would know if I was at the wrong house? Fuck you Randy, you don’t know shit”.

Theres no way that guys a threat haha he’s so unsteady a child could take him out. Still I see why that’s unsettling.

That part of the house is recently built and still unfinished. One plausible scenario if he’d gotten through the door is that he might have gone face-first down the basement steps, especially because I don’t think he’d have been capable of turning on the lights.

I’m not crazy about the prospect having a dead or severely injured drunk guy in the house.

Whats with the title of the video itself, at the top of the screen in the youtube window?

I’d change all the names to just the date/times of the recordings.

This is exactly why he is a threat, completely unpredictable.

What names are you seeing? Anything that could identify me or my location?

MAC000E53EE3590.ddns.eagl is at the top in the silver title bar of the video. Im not sure if thats the mac address of the camera, or what specifically. I would just be cautious of posting more till I knew it was innocuous. Hence my suggestion to change to a date time file name. Even if the title currently isn’t harmful, its easier to find on your computer if you always name the movies the same way.

Ah, thanks. Yeah, that’s that MAC address of the DVR. It shows as a title when I view the recordings. The YouTube video is a screen grab from my home computer using the viewing software.

I’m looking to upgrade the security DVR in the near future, anyway. Among other things, exporting video is really difficult, which is why I just did the screen grab instead. Also want to add a few more cameras.

When he first walks up the porch, it looks like he is reaching in to his pocket for his keys thinking he is actually at his house.

Either way, that is creepy.

Yeah, he fumbled in his pockets a bunch of times. (Lots of that got cut out when I edited the footage from two hours down to three minutes.) He also pulled out a cell phone and looked like he was trying to make a call - don’t know whether he actually connected with anyone. He even set the phone down on the armrest of one of the chairs for a while. Wouldn’t it have been something if he’d left it there?

Your porch reminds me of…

Definitely a zombie.

You’d rather be confronted by a sober guy breaking into your house than this guy?

Creepy.

Which camera system do you have?

I’m looking into something like that.

Not sure if that guy was drunk, he may have been, but there was something more than drinking going on there. I’ve seen lots of drunks, that is not how they act. Perhaps he was drunk and something else. How do people on drugs act? If not drugs, then mental illness is likely.

I’m wondering what the OP would have done had he been home. This same scenario happened to my next door neighbor and it took a while for the police to get there. But their guy gave up quicker and left. I think he was not as out of it and realized he was at the wrong place when someone inside told him to go away.

Unless you have some kind of special power, isn’t every stranger in every situation completely unpredictable?
