I ride my trainer three to four mornings a week because my schedule doesn’t allow me to get on the road in the evening. I was thinking about buying a second rear wheel and cassette just for the trainer to save wear and tear on the tire I ride outdoors. Anyone else do this? Any suggestions on a cheap rear wheel?
Just picked up a used second rear wheel and cassette on ebay just for trainer use. Paid $61 for used Rithcey wheel with shipping and $21 for the almost new sram cassette… Be patient and not to pickey and good deals are available there.
I’ve said it before. You can’t have too many wheels. I really like Deep-V rims like Velocity or Mavic CPX 30. Find some laced up 32 spokes to any decent hub. Use inside, use outside. Laugh at the pot-holes.
Thanks thats about the price range I am looking for.
I just sold a 250$ wheelset on ebay without a reserve price for 10$, totally unused. It had a 10 speed only hub when i ordered it and i only have 9 speed bikes. Anyway, it’s possible to find wicked deals. I feel a bit stupid, but live and learn.
If you ride a lot, with any variety (inside/outside, good & bad weather, hilly routes, flat races, whatever) you’ll definitely end up appreciating multiple wheels. MUCH easier to just change out an entire wheel than to swap back & forth between different tires and/or cassettes, plus then you’ll have a spare if/when one is down for the count.
I’ve gotten several decent wheels off eBay for under $100 (counting shipping, too). Might take awhile to sift through and find what you’re looking for, though. Helps to know all your specs as much as possible to narrow down the search; i.e., which factors are flexible (color, spoke count, rim brand, price, skewer, etc) and which are not (650/700c, shimano/campy). Some descriptions are very thorough, others clearly have no idea what they’re doing so it may take a little more homework on your part.
I’ve got an old Mavic Open Pro with this rubber on it…I’ve had it for four trainer seasons with no signs of wear on the tire:
