Second Bike Question

I need some advice on purchasing a second bike. Here’s my story: I live in NYC, but starting in April until early September, I will be spending extended weekends (Fri/Sat/Sun) in eastern LI (100 miles east of NYC). I have a Cervelo P2K that I will keep in LI for training on those days and racing. I am choosing not to take the bike back and forth. Therefore, I will have four days a week without a bike. Hence, the desire for a second bike. I would likely only use this second bike for short rides (20-30 miles) mostly in Central Park. I will not race with it. I want to spend less than $1,500 (all-in). Most likely drop bars with aero clip-ons, but with some degree of tri- specific “aeroness” and more forward geometry.

Other than “get one that fits”, any recommendations? Cervelo One since I am already a fan of the P2K? One of the lower end QRs? Some pure road bike that I might not even have heard of?

Thanks…

Soloist 105.

And the Soloist 105 gets a second vote from me.

That’s more than my target of <$1,500, right?

I think they list at $1599.

The Soloist gets my vote, too. You might also think about a Felt. I think they have a 105 equipped bike in the $1100 range. Spend less, get less.

"some degree of tri- specific “aeroness” and more forward geometry. "

Another vote for the Cervelo Soloist 105 for these requirements. If you just wanted a road bike and were concerned more about comfort and ride quality the Cervelo Super Prodigy would be the bike to have in this price range.

So you are hanging in the Hamptons? There is some good riding out there. Hate to break up the Soloist party, but that bike will run you $1699 before tax. If you buy it in New York you are looking at over $1800.

Why don’t you get an '04 Specialized Allez Comp or mass bike equivalent. MSP is $1600. Should be no problem finding it cheaper due to the competition for such a market. Depending on your sizing you are already siting at +/- 74 deg. Just slide the seat forward and your in. At the end of the season you could sell this thing locally in about a week.

Yes, the Hamptons. (But I like to say Eastern LI… it’s less pretentious). The rides are pretty good out there. From my house in Wainscott to the Montauk Lighthouse and back is exactly 50 miles. Flat then hilly and then flat again. Problem is, it’s usually strong tailwinds in the beginning, headwinds on the return.

Thanks for your thoughts. What are the mass produced equivalents that you have in mind?

I was thinking any thing by Cannondale (R1000), Trek (2100) or Specialized. I simply figured you could get a better deal on those than a Soloist. I love the Hamptons as long as you don’t go out with the crazies. Give me a deck and a grill and an a.m ride and I am there.
