Anybody doing this?
I have no idea what to expect; other than what I saw in the archives:
“First 50miles dangerous as hell, posers riding like idiots in the paceline destined to implode before the 100mi mark…”
He he… I could have guessed based on the doodes I see riding Burke Gilliman in pacelines while I run the BG.
Anyhoo, I’d like to try to roll into Pdx in the early afternoon… Say 2.30pm-3.30pm…Not sure if that’s realistic…
Post ride party over at the Rogue Brewery where I will conjure several excuses to drink several beers; and the guys at the Rogue promised they’d play the Tour.
I did it the last 2 years - in 2 days in 2005, 1 day in 2006. They let the 1 day riders (a few hundred) start before 5 AM, so if you don’t like crowds on bikes that’s when I would start.
Once you are far enough south to be through Seattle / Renton the ride has some pretty views for the first hundred miles or so. The last 50 miles, about where you cross into Oregon is also pretty. The 3rd fifty-mile stretch, from roughly Centralia to Longview I recall as hot, dry and boring. I wound up doing it solo last year as a riding partner dropped out at the last minute. There is only one climb of any size, down around Puyallup and even that’s not too bad. A 1 day ride in a good paceline or a relaxed 2 day ride with a group of friends are the best ways to do it, I think.
Cool… Are there plenty of pacelines to link up with ?
Man, do I love Rogue. There is no one anywhere near me that stocks it. Several of my favorite brews.
