Seattle area

I was just in Seattle for a week on vacation… I had no idea the fixed gear and cyclo-cross scene was so big out there. I’m from Austin, and you’ll see the occasional messenger riding around on a fixie, or hear a random cyclo-cross comment at a bike shop, but it’s nowhere as prominent. I didn’t know the Bianchi Pista was as inexpensive as it is, either ($550). Is that a good bike? I’ve been looking at fixed gear for a while now, just something to ride around and train on in the off season.

And the hills in downtown Seattle!! Good grief, I wanted to have my bike soooo bad, just start down somewhere on Western or 1st, and ride up, over, down, up, over, down. Are there any good Tri’s in that area? I’d love to come out for one this year.

Good tris? Hmm… There are a few races, and some of them might be good. SeaFair (a sprint). Kirkland (another sprint, with a HILLY bike course). Black Hills (Olympia, south of Seattle, run is all on trails). Baker’s Breakfast in Bellingham. Bellingham Tri, early season.

Tons of options in Seattle area. Bakers is an excellent race (although 90 miles North). Dannonman 70.3 in July is north, good course. Federal Escape, Tri without borders. Cascades Edge and Black Diamond should be considered. Seafair is really fun.

And fixed gear classes in TTs, cyclocross, and hill climbs. It’s enough to cross your eyes.
