Seattle again

University Tower Hotel

4507 Brooklyn Ave NE

Seattle, WA 98105

is this anywhere close to low traffic ridable roads ?? if not what would you recommend as far as accomodation where

  1. you can cook your own food
  2. close to Inst. for system biology located 1441 North 34th Street
  3. closeby rides/runs/swims

Thats over by the University of Washington. They have a very nice swimming facility if you can find a way to get in. Your academic credentials are likely to help you there. Alternatively you can use the Queen Anne or Ballard pool (you’re equidistant from each +/- 4 miles) on a daily basis for a few bucks:

As for running, I would head down to the water towards the Burke Gilliam Trail or over towards Ballard. I would never go to the BG on a weekend. As for riding head east from your door until you get to the lake. Good riding all around Lake Washington. Maps are here:

As Bryan indicated that hotel is over in the “University District”, which is very congested. It is relatively close to low traffic roads but getting there could be a pain. If you do not mind riding a couple miles in heavy traffic first, it is probably a good choice.

But, I would definitely check out the “Residence Inn by Marriott: Seattle – Lake Union”. That will put you in the heart of Seattle with super easy access to runs and rides. Very close to where you will be, about 2 miles I think.

I am sure the local tri shop Speedy Reedy, which will be about three blocks from the “Institute” and right on the Burke Gillman trail will be able to fill you in on great runs and rides from that area.

One last suggestion, be sure to check out Coleman pool in “West Seattle” while you are here. It’s our one 50 meter pool. It’s a salt water, outdoor pool, right on Puget Sound.

Enjoy your stay here.

When are you going to be in town?

.

I live pretty close to the U District (and this hotel) and the roads are not too bad. You are very close to the Bourke Gilman trail which gives you access to the north end of Seattle for some good training rides, the trail is also a good place to run.

The Marriot is nice but you will have just as much traffic there as you would in the U District.

You can also swim in Lake Washington…I swim with a group that does early morning swims (5.30) in the Lake at Madison Park. Seward Park is also a good place to swim. It’s also a beautiful run along the lake! You are probably about 4-6 miles from Lake Washington.

Don’t forget to let me know about the BBQ!!!

getting there around august 4th. then race in spokane. then intensive course until aug 16th. so roughly 4th to 17th.
just wondering if I will fly back to EP then 4 days later fly again to Seattle or stay there and then go to Penticton directly so stay from teh 4th to 20th.

You should stay - that’s the best time of year to be in Seattle; there really isn’t a nicer place to be in this country in August…

.

The U district where you’ll be staying can be pretty congested. For runs you might try heading west a few miles to Lower Woodland Park or if you want to run with the masses you can go around Greenlake right next to the park. I think it’s about a 3 mile loop around Greenlake.

Francois,

The hotel is actually in a fun area - “The Ave” which is the cheap eats street for the UW, etc… I take you will be going to ISB? Anyway,

For runs you can drop down to the Burke-Gilman (going West) then cut up towards Greenlake and around through the Ravenna Ravine - nice 10k loop. Some concrete, asphalt, and trail.

For rides you can drop down to the Burke-Gilman and over the Montlake bridge (near the UW Med Center/ Stadium) and through some back streets to Lake Washington Blvd. This road is the nexus for most inner city rides including the Mercer Island Loop, south end of the lake, north end (although you would probably want to do it clockwise which would make this near last), May Valley, etc… Most of the routes are available from the north end of the loop but the Burke-Gilman is lame, not scenic, etc… Once you get up towards Kenmore it opens quite a bit and gets better.

come by and say hi,

Actually, as someone suggested I am looking at the residence inn marriot union lake as condos have kitchens. I was invited at CMU 2 summers ago and going to the restaurant for every meal is depressing…hate it.

what is the CMU? what restaurant?

Carnegie Mellon U (in PGH…hated the town, hated the hotel…good thing research and work were good).
