Seatpost thoughts, please

Hey gang,

Doing some work on the bike, and one thing I want to do is swap out the cast iron  , very heavy seatpost for something lighter. Given that:

  1. What’s a good seatpost? Carbon, not carbon, offset, etc.

  2. Any benefit to the “aero” seatposts? All things being equal, is there a point in buying one?

Thanks!

Thomson Elite Masterpiece is as light and stronger than most Carbon posts. Plus, being aluminum, it won’t crease or crack. Sure it’s round and not bladed aero, but it does just fine. You’d be hard pressed to find a better alternative.

The only thing you need to know: Thomson Elite or Masterpiece. The Masterpiece is the best post on the market, but it isn’t available in an offset version. Go with the Elite if you are on a budget, need an extra long post, or need a setback post.

Are carbon seatposts prone to crease and crack?

How is the Thompson Elite for comfort? I’m also looking for a new seatpost, and considering carbon for the cush ride.

What about the ‘aero’ posts? Any benefit? I’ve seen a couple that were well priced…

How is the Thompson Elite for comfort?

Been using it for a couple of years with a Selle Italia SLR (original version). It doesn’t feel any different than my previous carbon seatpost (Profile), which now lives on my beater bike.

What about the ‘aero’ posts? Any benefit?

Not according to John Cobb.

Carbon seaposts CAN crease ifyou over tighten your seatpost bolt and can crack if you take a digger. For the money, the Elite Masterpiece is the best thing since sliced bread.

Actually, it does. One of my really old seatposts had a micro adjust, serrated clamp (as opposed to the nice infinitely adjustable clamp on the Thompson and other good posts). The saddle was always either a half degree too high or too low. That was annoying.

If you are going to go with an aero post, get the corima. The only real advantage is to leave a bigger space for air to travel between your legs, and the Corima certainly does that. It’s also flipable, so you can use it to get more or less forward. Very nice post, but it has limited length adjustment, so make sure the size you buy is going to fit properly.

The Thomson seat post is the best cycling component you can buy. It’s really that simple. It will outlast your bike, and probably you.

Thanks. Is it worth the $$ to buy the Masterpiece over the Elite?

Probably not from a rational perspective, but I did it anyway.

If you ride Chorus, Record, or DuraAce - go with the Elite Masterpiece
105 - Elite
Centaur, Ultegra - your choice.
