Seat height & Knee strain

For those of you who might know a little more on this have a look please.

Got the new bike, and have been fitted (don’t want to go into that TOO much now). Just over a week ago, after fairly large jump in running volume, I started to notice ITB/knee pain. I first associated it to the increase of run volume but the truth is that I have only had the bike for about 2 weeks now and have been playing with the position ever since.

Something I experience when I first started triathlon was that my long run were really painful in my knee. After about a month it got to the point where I couldn’t run. . .and it was the seat position on my bike. Yep, didn’t hurt when I cycling but the run was excruciating.

This time around the pain is in a little different area but I still think it is a seat position issue. Do you guys happen to remember how it goes:

Seat to low and pain behind the knee; Seat too high and pain in front of the knee. . .or is it vice versa.

Thanks and BTW the Dremel tool worked great and so did the super glue!!!

If you were fit to your bike, why have you “been playing with the position ever since?” Sounds like trouble to me.

As for the knee pain, you have it backwards - too high can cause pain behind the knee (sometimes IT band problems, too), too low can cause pain in the front of the knee.

Couple of questions:

did you get new shoes / cleats? Are they properly adjusted?

How different is the position on your new bike compared to your old one. Even if your position before was terrible, your body had probably acclimatised to it. Any adjustments should be made gradually.

The rule of thumb is behind the knee = too high, in front of the knee = too low.

Ryan in GA,

I think jhendric has it straight. If you were properly fitted and in only two weeks you are playing with the position, then your doing everything necessary to get yourself into trouble.

Add to that experimenting with more changes to correct the possible problems of the first changes.

I’m beginning to wonder if when you begin experiencing abdominal pain you will be asking if any of us know how to remove an appendix.

You need to stop and recognize the limitations of your knowledge and your ability to self diagnosis and treat your injury/pain. You easily could be doing yourself far more detriment than benefit and increasing the severity of your problem as well. Give up and get a qualified medical or a qualified/experienced bike fitter
consultation. Recognize the fitter may also refer you to someone who practices in exercise medicine.

You could easily have other issues that are the fundamental cause of your pain.

Don’t forget the proverb about a man with just a little knowledge can be a very dangerous thing.

"Seat to low and pain behind the knee; Seat too high and pain in front of the knee. . "

Sort of. If you can get a copy of the book “High Performance Cycling” by Jeukendrup there is a chapter on “Injury Prevention and Management” that covers knee problems associated with cycling in detail.

Thanks for you input, everyone. I will likely go to the ART therapist but just wanted to find out more about the simple concern on seat heights and knee pain.

FYI, I have been fit several times and by different peeps. I have a pretty good idea what works for me usually and perhaps my issue is just too much too soon on the run. . .

Thanks again!
