Searching for Plastic Loctite (or similar) for wheelbuilder disc cover

I would like to make my wheelbuilder disc cover semi-permanent. Blue and Red Loctite can NOT be used on plastic screws. Any suggestions on a loctite-like product for plastic screws. It appears Loctite 425 might work, but it’s not clear. I went to an automotive parts store and they recommended gasket sealer or gasket maker.

What are folks using that is not too permanent but holds it all nicely in place?

Yeah, I’d say the same. Black RTV sealant would probably work just fine. Or some other similar type of gasket maker. If you don’t want black, clear silicone would probably work well too. I think that’d be your best for something that will make a seal, but would be removable. You could also use the gasket sealant between the lip of your wheel and the edge of your disc cover as well to make a smoother transition there if you are looking for ways to make the overall package a bit more complete.

Try a couple wraps of plumber’s teflon tape. It doesn’t create a bond, but does a great job of keeping the screws from vibrating loose. I used them on my CH cover for years.

If you’re going permanent, consider using electrical tape to cover the edge where the cover meets your rim to improve the airflow.

Just use some teflon tape.

If you’d prefer to use gasketing material, I’d get Hylomar.

Small amount sealed and kept in lubricating oil better than any other RTV I used. A mis-application really, but would probably do the trick.

Your choice, but I’d probably just use teflon tape.

I used GE Silicone Sealant for plastic sheets and other plastics. I found it in the adhesive aisle of Home Depot by the Loctite. It is translucent, flexible, adhesive, and UV resistant. I just placed a little dab on each screw. So far has worked like a charm, admittedly I’ve only ridden it about 200 miles.

I google searched it, and found it under the brand name Lexan, as seen here:

Lexan is the name of plastic sheet (similar to plexiglass, which is what it was designed to replace) which is what you are supposed to use that stuff on. Just FYI – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexan. Lexan is (was) a GE copyright/TM. I mention this mostly because if someone goes into a hardware store looking for Lexan, they will get plastic sheet.

Ok, thanks. I’m really not a Lexan or plastic expert, I just saw the words “for plastic” on the label and bought it. The tube I have does not actually say “Lexan”, it is titled “GE Silicone Sealant”. I found that image by searching on the barcode. Still seems to work. Screws are held in place, but I beleive I coud undo them if I desired.
