Does anyone have recommendations for scuba shops that will let you rent a tank for a shore dive? I’m also looking for a night dive. I found a Manta ray dive-is that cool or lame? I’ve been to sting ray city so I don’t really need to see a tribe of rays but I really love night dives. I’m renting a car on Hawaii but not on Oahu if that matters.
Ocean Eco Tours. http://www.oceanecotours.com/ Rob and Bridgette are really helpful. They are located at Honokohau Harbor. Their # is 808-331-2121. Night dives are awesome if you’re not scared. Totally different creatures at night…kj
If you’re near Kona, shore diving is kind of disappointing. The really cool sites are along the Kohala coast, away from the airport and marina. Lots of lava tubes, a good many critters you don’t see elsewhere. I’d avoid diving without someone who knows the area well, there can be some strong currents and borderline surface conditions. If you want some tips on good dive companies in the area, let me know. The group that operates out of the Mauna Lani resort has always treated me well, and one of the divemasters is a triathlete. Some great dive sites are just a couple of minutes from the Mauna Lani anyway
Would love to dive Hawaii. Most of my diving has been wreck dives in the cold, dark, murky waters of the Great Lakes. My tropical dives in the Carribean are a real treat in comparison.
Even if I could qualify for Kona, I’d be bringing my scuba gear along with the bike.
I’ll give oceanecotours a call, good heads up about the shore dive info. I’m definitely not afraid of night dives-they’re my favorite.
I’m not racing in Kona but am one of the American Posers racing in Honolulu. I have to admit I’m totally torn about diving before the race. I’m thinking of getting in a dive on Oahu on thurs or fri if I can find one.
