Scott Tinley, WTF?

Do any of the regular Triathlete mag readers look at Tinley’s rants in “Tinley Talks” at the back of the mag and say WTF?!?!? Has he completely gone off the rails? Is it just me?

I stopped reading his “article” probably a year or so ago with the same conclusion. I think he has been in the sun a little to long.

I must be a glutton for punishment, because I continue to read his articles month after month and every month I shake my head at the crap he thinks up.

I have often wondered the same thing. However, I know some that think he is so “right on”. To each his own, I guess.
It used to really annoy me that he had “seen the light” and how self indugent we are. It took him a long time to figure out what most of us knew all along.
Never the less, I really respect what he did for the sport and how he race well in so many races.

Stopped reading it as well. Someone should send an e-mail to the mag.

I rarely could get into his writing. Been years since I had a triathlete magazine. Too obtuse for me.

Hear hear!

As an English professor, Tinley should recognize that while writing might take effort, reading it* shouldn’t*. You lose your audience otherwise.

I guess I’m in the minority. I love his column, my favourite part of the magazine.

I totally agree. I don’t think I’ve ever finished one of his articles. He’s way too wordy and seems like he’s trying too hard to be writerly.

Geniuses are often misunderstood and their work can be confusing.
ST has this in common with them.

ps- I appreciate the work he puts in to getting to a point.

It’s either the best thing in the magazine or the worst. I’ve read both. On the other hand, his “competition” whatever the technical name is for that last page - Jeff Mallet - easily writes the best column in any magazine. It’s often the ONLY thing I read.

This is to funny i just talked to ST and he is hurt and crying like a baby, now he is going to finish grading papers and drinking a bottle of wine…

Hahahahaha.

Excellent stuff Kenny.

As one ex-pro triathlete once said to me "It is better to be a “has-been” than a “never-was”.

Tinley rules!!!

X3.

I really enjoy reading his stuff

Are you serious? English is my second language and I find Scott’s ‘Tinley Talks’ a pleasurable and facile to read column. He is witty and I particularly take zestful pleasure when he strays into pathos. I am also sure that he is jocund after reading the egregious and impious posts in this thread.

Hey Kenny,

I have always loved his articles. That many of the atricles are a bit to the side of the stereotypical triathlete is not only refreshing, but it helps reset my Reality-Meter. It is not surprising to many on ST, That I, as resident “Occasionally Drunk, aging Mentally Ill Athlete”, would so drawn To Writers like Scott, I think he is the best, He makes me think and remember…To do Ironman Canada every year is hard.

2 shakey thumbs for Scott Tinley/////////////
He is the real deal

I’m a fan.

I like his writing and I find the man to be inspiring.

I had the good fortunte to bump into ST while at the beach in San Diego a few years ago. He was gracious when I approached and introduced myself.

I think his tenor is interesting and I don’t find his articles difficult to read nor digest.

Cheers,
Puskas

I really like how you gradually delved into the verbosity there.

I’m a fan but I’m a contemporary of Tinley’s both in terms of age and when I started in the sport. His writing has changed over the years as his perspective on the sport and life has changed.

When I look at the mag at the newsstand, the Tinley column is the only thing I read from start to finish.

I do think he might be a better fit in the new Inside Triathlon, which I think is going to appeal more to the vets in the sport while Triathlete is focused more on the newbies.

I enjoyed his most recent column about supermarkets. I remember the location of the supermarket at nearly every race or training trip I’ve done.
