Scott Plasma III (!?)

I was on the Scott website, and they had this little video teaser of a new TT bike they are developing with Columbia… I assume its b/c they didnt like the Plasma II for whatever reason (since they are still riding the Giant prototypes from last year). Anyone know any details? Seems funny since most shops are just receiving their shipments of Plasma IIs right now… Shortest bike life cycle ever?

**We’ve seen the future, and it’s about to get faster,… again. **

SCOTT Bicycles, the worldwide leader in carbon fiber manufacturing, has something new for the future, and we want you to have a sneak peak. “The Carbon Experts”, in collaboration with Team Columbia-Highroad, have implemented a revolutionary R&D process for creating a new TT frame. When passion, commitment, innovation, and technology are infused into one project, you can expect an amazing product.

Please Check out the video to view a new revelation in aerodynamics and an incredible R&D process.

Interestingly the front end looks an awful lot like the Giant bikes they’re riding now.

agreed it looks a lot like the bikes High Road were riding. Im sure Scott was pissed that a number of the riders were on “non” scott TT bikes that were clearly Giants. I’m not complaining always nice to see improvements.

looks a lot like the Giant bike crossed with a P4 crossed with a Plasma.

Neat that they’re putting the brake internal to the front fork… I think that is going to be next year’s “brake behind the BB”

I already preordered one at my local scott dealer!

Oh… sorry… april fools is over

Here it is, I know the pic aint working.

interesting.

not sure what is happening over on the back of the bike. does the bike have slotted seat stays, or double seat stays, or does the pic just show a before and after shot of a possible design change?

Looks like there will be some Plasma 2’s going cheap…

Some other pics, via BikeRadar, of the prototype

The front end borrows a few cues from the Plasma 2 but adds an external steerer tube for better aerodynamics

http://i41.tinypic.com/1175s0z.jpg
By moving the steerer outside the head tube Scott are able to effectively increase the aspect ratio of the combined structure to more than 3:1 without violating UCI guidelines

http://i40.tinypic.com/2cp9ph3.jpg
The head tube has a similar geometric hourglass-like profile as on the Plasma 2 but can now be made narrower since there is no steerer tube inside

http://i40.tinypic.com/2qipoh5.jpg
The stem is fully integrated into the top of the external steerer tube and blends into the horizontal top tube

http://i44.tinypic.com/30djom0.jpg
The base bar melds cleanly into the integrated stem

http://i44.tinypic.com/dg5cmp.jpg
The rear wheel cutout extends past the seatstays and there appears to be no provision for mounting a brake caliper, which suggests it’s been moved to below the bottom bracket

I love the method of prototyping they use. I suppose Cervelo and the other companies use similar methods?

Best quote ever, “It’s no secret that Team Columbia-Highroad have largely shunned Scott’s Plasma 2 for time trial use in favour of their ‘Highroad dev’ bikes. This should perhaps come as no surprise given that the Plasma 2’s fit and handling were designed for multisport applications. But a teaser video released by Scott Bicycles suggests this situation may change in the very near future.” - James Huang (http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/new-scott-time-trial-bike-on-the-way-for-team-columbia-highroad-21102)

Yup, somebody needs to call up Cervelo and Felt and tell them that triathlon fit and handling is no good for time trialists…

As an aside, why do bikeradar and cyclingnews have the same articles by the same authors? I don’t get that.

Bike Radar and cyclingnews are owned by the same company.

Would you be happier if the quote was:

"It’s no secret that Team Columbia-Highroad have largely shunned Scott’s Plasma 2 for time trial use in favour of their ‘Highroad dev’ bikes. This should perhaps come as no surprise given that the Plasma 2 was a poorly designed bike, aerodynamically and otherwise."

Be carefull, if I remember right the Plasma 2 had the fastest bike split at Kona, correct?

Maybe, but what the heck does that mean?

A brick will fly if you put enough thrust behind it.

I think it means that it might not be as bad aerodynamically as some might believe, it is just that the Columbia team riders do not like how it fits them. It seems to fit others pretty well and can go fast when ridden that way

My gut feeling is that this bike would be a nightmare to handle. I can’t wait for a triathlete riding it with 2.5lbs of liquid mounted on the aerobars to cut my line in a corner. it’s gonna be sweet.

I see some pretty promising cable routing opportunites in this design. And maybe a good way to make the bars adjustable on angle. Lots of potential in this.

FINALLY they’re using the most aero wheels out there as part of their testing protocol - it’s about time
.

Doesn’t it seem like a whole lot of R&D dollars going down the drain?

They’re replicating the Giant almost to a T with the tiniest of differences, which already been proven to be great by Cervelo, their own Scott ‘speed shadow’ rear stays…

I almost thought this was a two day late April Fools joke. If they’re going to spend all of that time in the wind tunnel, maybe stray just a little bit from the Giant they are imitating. But, maybe High Road is saying they won’t ride any other bike, so Scott had to publish this marketing piece to give them some cred’.
