School me on cables

This winter I plan to replace the cables on the Pinarello, Has Jagwire now and seems fine. Should I go with them again or is there a better replacement? Also think I will go with red this time…http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/185197_226101927425987_100000785448182_552608_2983155_n.jpg

Jagwire is what I use when I re-cable. Makes the bike feel like it has a brand new drivetrain. I should probably do it more often. I nearly tried Nokon until two different shop mechanics told me they’re not nearly worth the effort.

The only other option I’d consider is Gore, but I can get 50% off Jagwire cables, which makes it pretty hard to justify the extra expense.

Yokozuna Reaction. Lesson over, class dismissed.

+1. Though you do want to make sure that you trim your break housings to the correct length, and the final length may be less than what you are used to. I cut them too long the first time and the brakes developed severe play in them. I think i took off about 2" from my front and 2" from the rear to make them work.

Thanks for the replies…

I’ve ridden Jagwire, Gore, Yokozuna, and random oem stuff from the LBS. I’ve always found there isn’t that much of a difference when properly set up. I probably like Yokozuna the best, but the brake cable housing is actually TOO stiff if you ask me.

…i was reading that yokozuna are extremely stiff thus requiring bgger lops - was worried about internal routing

can u comment on that - appreciate

they just came out with new housings for frames with internally routed cables. the price is actually rather steep…

I use to re- cable my bike every year. I used about everything. There has been times the cables were silky smooth and other times the cables were not. I found it really is about the setup. Trim cable housing and don’t leave jagged ends on the brake housing. Use big enough loops.

Surprisingly… One of the smoothest brake setup’s I had was with some bulk Shimano cable I got once. Now, I switch cable when it starts to get nasty at the ferrule connections. I have Gore on two of my bikes now… That seems to last the longest if you don’t get cuts in the cable liner that the cable slides in.

I had some nokon… But, I never put it on as I heard it wasn’t that great, so I sold it on eBay. I can’t speak for that product. Magenta is on sale at blueskycycling.com really cheap.

I just replaced the Jagwire cables on my tri bike with Gore fully sealed and the shifting with the Gore was so much smoother and required less pressure to get it to shift. I’m going to replace the cables on the road bike as well but I’ll wait until the spring.

Try the Shimano PTFE coated cables with their SP41 housing (now available in colors). Fantastic performance w/out all the hassle. For SRAM, you can get away with Jagwire cables, just make sure your mechanic greases the cables with Shimano Special Grease or Slick Honey before going in the housing.

necropost-

I’m going to recable my bike and a buddy strongly suggests SRAM cables for the SRAM drive train components (he claims that the slight diameter difference creates a significant difference).

The PTFE cables don’t really cost all that much more than the regular - but I’d love to hear from anyone else who maybe has an opinion? I’ll probably be buying from Amazon, as the LBS doesn’t even sell cable.

(Side bar: any issues with pairing DA brakes and Red brifters?)

I just got a pretty decent deal (I think) on Jagwire derailleur and Shimano brake housings and cables from planetcyclery.com. Cable endcaps too. They sent me black vs the grey Shimano brake housing I ordered, so I emailed them over the weekend when their site says they’re closed - they emailed me back quickly to apologise and shipped the right housing this morning.

I thought I read that Gore has gotten out of the cable business. I’ve used them, they were nice, but the PTFE are nearly as good and certainly good enough for a tri-rig.

I’ve run all kinds of cables and housings. Gore, Sram, Shimano, and Nokon on my brakes…none made that much of a difference. The Gore felt slightly smoother…but nothing mind blowing. IMO…its more on how the cable is routed…vs the housings you use. You want nice radial bends instead of tight bends. I’ll also add some lube (Rock n Roll Cable Magic) when I insert the cables into the housings. Double check the ends of the housings for burrs and that its not oval from being cut.

For shift cables I use the Teflon Jagwire cable with Shimano housing and plain cables for the brake.

I’d go Nokon for the bling factor and the fact it is a sealed system and you can use pretty much any bend radius that you want. After several years of using them I can put them on nearly as fast as regular cables. Gore stuff always worked well for me, but they are getting out of the cable business so it is getting harder to find. I only tried the Yokozuna cables for a month and don’t really have an opinion on them. They were not bad, but I did not see the shifting improvement that others claim to see from the lubed cables and saw no difference in braking. I have not checked their stuff in a while, but if I remember correctly you can’t use the cables with Campy 11. Not sure what grouppo you are running so this may not be an issue for you.
