The Job Fair scenes are really depressing for me as I’m going to one tomorrow and I have a feeling I’ll need to wear really comfortable shoes because I’ll be waiting in line.
No, these are all lies. There are plenty of jobs and degrees that can be gotten in a week. See the media and stupid poor people are blowing things way out of proportion to sell newspapers. Everything is really great and it’s a lack of optimism that is the problem, if there where a problem which there isn’t. :-p
Oddly, most of us DO have jobs (only say, 90+ % of us). These idiots need to stop focusing on gloom and doom…but if they are not bitching they are not happy.
For those of us who have been laid off as a result of the economy and unfunded projects, and can’t find work despite 10+ years experience in the industry, and see the consequences of foreclosures and suspended building projects, this doesn’t feel overstated.

Sorry that you lost your job…and I do hope you find a new thing soon.
Have you considered paving roads?<<<<<<<<<
That was a joke to try to point out how foolish this “infrastructure” plan is…not everyone can, nor does everyone want to pave roads. At the end of the day, we know who will be the next Rockerfellers and Carnegie’s. I suppose with all the new roads going in maybe we can finally find the corpse of Jimmy Hoffa (dont tell Geraldo!). I think that you know that this “plan” will do nothing for you, nor most if any of the people you know.
But, I do know a local “construction” company in the city that I live in that used to be called “Rockford Blacktop” that has recently changed their name so that they can try to get some of these new “contracts” on a more regional basis and are drooling all over their collective chins waiting for the new “stimulus roads” to get paved. No, they do not plan to hire more staff, nor purchase new equipment according to the local paper.
At least Obama kinda sorta got off the "gloom and doom’ kick he was on while running for office - months after he was elected.

Despite your sarcasm, the unemployment rate in America is 8.1% so there appears to be some facts suggesting that there is a lot of hype. I know YOUR situation is different but if you look at the country as a whole, I would say the catastrophe is just a tad overblown.
or completely fuck up water supply in Northern and Southern California, just to save the Delta Smelt. Oh, wait, sorry, it’s the drought not the preferential treatment of endangered species over ensuring available water for planting crops for human consumption, thereby increasing food prices nationwide.
Regardless of who is to “blame” this really is sad to see. If you don’t want to be depressed, don’t look.
Very sad, I have to admit.
How many recessions have you been through, Jen? I think this makes the sixth or seventh one for me. The link below this paragraph takes you to an economics blog which shows the 3 depressions, six sharp and five mild recessions we’ve went through since 1920:
I think the average length of a recession has been about eleven months. It’s becoming increasingly clear with each passing day that this is going to be the sharpest one over the last fifty years. The next link takes you to the Seeking Alpha" website, where there’s a good breakdown of indicators and also a “good news, bad news, and bottom line” scenario.
I graduated from college in 1990 and there wasn’t squat for jobs in New England. I went and hid out in a National Park for a while and it took me a year after I left there to find a job that would make an actual contribution to the household. So, been there. It just sucks when I have a sparkling resume but there are probably 50 people applying for the same job with the same resume but less exerience and cheaper. Networks are working for me though. I have lots of contacts that I’m working and submitting resumes all over the place so I’m not being passive but not many companies are hiring in my industry. I just created a 3rd version of my resume that has a smaller focus on the specific industry and heavier on general skills. Gotta think outside the box, or cubicle

Good luck. I mean that sincerely. And always remember: If you’re a manager, you can “manage” anything. I walked into this airline gig (which I’m voluntarily leaving for the entrepreneur world on the 31st of this month) just on the basis of that little observation. Confidence, girl!! Tons of it!!
