For my work I have to print out long pieces of paper (it’s thermal printer paper similar to what you’d see in an old adding machines or receipt printers)…
Anyway, I get these printouts that can be 10-15 feet long that need to be submitted electronically to various agencies. As of right now we (i.e.: Mrs. Duffy) cuts the strips to fit and tape on 8.5x11 sheets of paper, and makes cans of those. Pain in the ass!
Does anyone know of a scanner that you can feed this paper through (in the lengths I’m talking about) and it’ll make the electronic file? It would be nice if software is available to make the 8.5x11 sheets automatically but, frankly, I don’t really care if County Environmental Health has to deal with a 25 page PDF with a strip of numbers running down the middle.
Don’t know of anything that could handle 15’ in one continuous pass, but maybe you could look at this - handles up to 30" (so 2.5’) in one pass, so your worst case would be 6 scans - http://www.neat.com/products/neatreceipts/
Not perfect, but should cut your work by better than half

B&W: OCe TDS 610
It’ll scan 36" widths, up to 49 foot lengths. I’ve used one off and on for the last 8 years. They just work. 16.4ft/min
Colour: OCe TC4
36" wide x 49 feet long. 13 ft/min colour scanning. 16.4’/min B&W.
I don’t think I’ve ever used one of these. I’ve had them built into colour printers, but it was the same device. The printer part was finicky, but the scanner always worked.
Printouts from a Veeder Root, right? Been there, done that and I still haven’t found a better way than cutting them up and taping them to paper.
I thought about just having a TCP/IP card that I can pop into each Veeder Root system temporarily (assuming it doesn’t already have one) and then just using Inform or some other software to download the data and print it out.
Otherwise, if you find a way to scan the printouts I’d love to know about it.
I mostly do environmental regulatory compliance work, but I also occasionally do UST related work. I’ve been certified on, and messing around with, Veeder Root, Incon, and other systems for about 15 years.

Exactly what I was thinking, why print it out at all and even if you have to why not store the data in some way to print out later. The one that pops into my mind is the service we use for our solvent tank. They print out a similar “Receipt” the day they come in and give it to you but they follow up with an invoice on an 8 1/2 X 11" sheet with all the same data. I’d have to guess they are simply transfering the data with a card or wireless. Seems like the way to go if for some reason you HAVE to have print out that day and then later you have to send that data to someone else.
I would also think that someone somewhere would have something that could do this or software that would be able to make a regular automatic document feeder system do this. Rather then pulling in sheet after sheet to scan it’s all one sheet. Pulls in 11", scans it, pulls in another 11", scans that etc. You could rig up a holder for the 15’ roll and let it go.
I’m not 100% sure how ADF’s look for page breaks but it may be as simple as getting a scanner with an ADF and sticking one end in and let it go…never tried it though…but since I have one I can and I will let you know what happens
Well it doesn’t work. Apparently the ADF looks for the end of the page and then scans. Again I would think that you would be able to over ride this in some way as the ADF does indeed feed a long piece of paper. It feed probably 20-25" before it errored out. It even scanned and saved on part of it.
