San Fran People: Recommend your fav restaurant

I’m looking to buy my sister a gift certificate for a good restaurant out in San Fran. Anyone have any ideas? I’m on the east coast. Nice, but not ridiculously expensive (plates less than 25 bucks or so).

Thanks

I’m not from San Fran, but I always liked the North Beach Restaurant when I would go. I know, somebody is probably going to say that it is a tourist trap or something like that, but it was good.

Chainpin, do you live in SF?

No, but I’m somewhere just as bad.

I like San Fran all those hills are so neat.

I was going to say you probably get a lot of rolling eyes when you open your mouth. I know I do whenever I visited. But what can you expect from a city who elects Pelosi.

protip: no one who lives there calls it San Fran. SF, and the City (because, yes, it pretends to be like New York) are acceptable. Also unacceptable: Frisco. Frisco is a town in Texas. And Colorado. But not in california.

Why should I care what locals call it. I don’t want anybody to think I’m looney enough to live there.

I no longer live in SF but The Slanted Door was always our favorite.

Slanted Door, brilliant! It’s a destination restaurant around here but is not expensive or pretentious. And who doesn’t like Vietnamese food?

Another idea might be to buy her a certificate to a restaurant in a nearby getaway town such as Sonoma or Guerneville. That would draw her out of the city for a day to go wine-tasting, cycling, lying on the beach on the Russian River or the like. (What does she like to do?) Unfortunately I do not know the restaurants up there.

Wait, there is a Vietnamese restaurant called the slanted door. That is the most brilliant thing I have heard today. I would love to eat Vietnamese in a slanted door.

Check out Opaque. It’s a dining experience. All the waiters are blind. Once you all get seated, they turn off the lights and its VERY dark. You “experience” your meal with all your senses.

The Slanted Door is a good suggestion. I also like B44 in Belden Alley. Pacific Catch is great (I like the inner sunset location). Mona Lisa in North Beach for Italian with a fun atmosphere. Pizza Inferno on Fillmore was a favorite when I lived a few blocks from it.

What Katy said.

Others would be:

R&G Lounge for Chinese
Bluestem Brasserie
Chez Papa
Luella
Colosseo in North Beach

Thanks everyone. I decided to cheat and ask her boyfriend what her favorite is. He said Firefly and Suppenkuche. Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll keep them in mind for when I visit in February,

I’ve been to Suppenkuche. Food was great. Great beers. Tried to go again during August and it was packed at every table, and not a stool at the bar available.
