right on!!im talkin bout the stage races tho haha
.
San Dimas draws stronger riders due to huge number or racers in So Cal plus proximity to Northern Cal.
I have raced both, San Dimas definately drew the most competitive fields. I had my arse kicked when I last raced it. Come to think of it Thurlow Rogers put a shoe imprint on the entire masters 35+ peleton’s posterior. I really used to like the original TBC course with the climb up Gates Pass, but unfortunately not part of the course now ![]()

Depends on what your build + strengths are. SDSR is friggin hard–a climbers race that requires endurance + strength. Depending on which category you are in(cat 4 is usually the 2nd or 3rdfastest field overall). Opening TT is like TT’ing 1/2 of alp d’uez. RR is just hard…not unusual for 1/2 of field to be dropped. TT usually decides 3 of top 5, and RR does the rest. Crit is tight and hard. Probably the best amateur 3 day stage race in CA in spring. FWIW i think Calville is better.

Sure, when you’re category races the shortest distance, it’s usually the fastest overall…
The road race is only as hard as the field makes it. The course itself is not that tough.
- Faster than the 2 and 3 fields, both of which had two more laps. Slower than Pro 1, Jr, 35+, and 45/55+ fields. Around as fast as the W1-3 field.
I agree that the road course isn’t that tough.
And a slower avg. speed doesn’t necessarily mean the race was easier.

Yeah, people get hung up on the avg speed being an indicator of race difficulty. The cat 4 field might have been a faster avg speed only because it’s so much shorter (1/2 the distance, of P/1 if I recall). Or maybe in the 2 and 3 fields a break went up the road with teams represented and there was no need to chase it down.
I did a few back-to-back 35+ 1,2,3 / P12 crits this year and the 35+ was faster almost every time. However, it was also a third less time.
