How far would you like to run?

i will be going to san diego today for about a week. i will be staying in the downtown area without a car or my bike. are there any good running/swimming groups I could get involved with or any stellar routes that anyone can recommend to me? cheers

From downtown, there are two nice runs I can think of off the top of my head that are interesting and safe.

  1. Head west until you can’t anymore. That’s San Diego Bay. You are likely standing in front of a ship (how far north/south you are dictates whether it’s a tuna boat, luxury yacht, cruise ship, 12 meter racing yacht, aircraft carrier museum, Star of India, or Berkeley . The sidewalk you are standing on is part of several races, among them the San Diego Int’l Triathlon, and the America’s Finest City Half Marathon. It runs along Harbor Drive, which goes along the water all the way from Seaport Village, which is south/left, to past the airport, which is to the north/right. The bluff you see across the bay is Point Loma, and you can run to the end of it from where you are, as well (that’s pretty far, though…maybe 8 miles out–The AFC HM starts up there, and you are about 2/3 of the way from start to finish…).

  2. Go back to Harbor Drive, and find the Ferry to Coronado. get off the ferry at the Ferry landing, and run South along the Silver Strand. This is the venue for the Silver Strand Half Marathon, so it’s 13 Miles to Imperial Beach. Do as much of that as you want.

Balboa Park has excellent running trails.
