San Diego to Cincinnati relocation

There is a very good chance that I will be relocating to Cincinnati from San Diego. Love SD but my wife and I are excited for this move. I need help on areas/neighborhoods. Will actually be working in Lawrenceburg, IN. Not sure if Blue Ash, Indian Hills is to far of a commute- I’ve seen postings that there is a high concentration of endurance athletes there. I guess north and west of the city???
Any suggestions (except for saying don’t do it) of areas to live; nice family areas where I can train and plenty of goups.
Married, one child, tri freak

Thanks for any suggestions

I know you said you’re excited, but all I can think is “bummer.”
.

Blue Ash would be 40 minute drive at best, worse in traffic. If you can afford to live in Indian Hill then hire yourself a driver while you’re at it.

Depends on what kind of neighborhood you’re looking for - the west side of Cincinnati is a lot older and more developed. Downtown to Lawrenceburg wouldn’t be too bad a drive but I wouldn’t live downtown. You might consider northern Kentucky, close access to I-275 which will take you right to Lawrenceburg.

I live in Blue Ash with team mates in Indian Hill. GREAT area of the city and prices won’t be too shocking if coming from San Diego County. A pretty long drive to Lawrenceburg though, but the east side of the city is where you want to be. Feel free to PM for any details. I’m in SD quite a bit as well.

I lived in Cinti for 5 years. West side is generally the more blue-collar neighborhoods. Hyde Park, Mt. Lookout, Indian Hills (ultra $$$), Mt. Adams, Blue Ash are all great areas. Generally anything on the East or Northeast side of the city is gonna be in a nice area, with a generally affluent demographic. I lived right off Hyde Park square and kick myself for not buying a piece of property there - ~2002 you could pick up a 3br. brick construction home built in the early 1900s in the low-to-mid 100s. Not sure what the market has done there since then…don’t miss out on Oktoberfest (Cinti is Munich’s sister city and supposedly the second largest Oktoberfest in the world). Those midwesterners know how to party…

My condolences…

I live in Hyde Park and the best thing about it from a tri perspective is convenience. You can easily swim at Xavier U with some fantastic former college swimmers, many group bike rides leave very near or you can ride slightly east into rural areas where you never need to stop, great running area as well.

I know people who have done this relo – you are about to learn a new term…HUMIDITY!.

If you are working in IN, you may consider living in Northern KY – lots of great homes with, probably, much more land / yard than you are used to. In KY tho, not as much tri lifestyle but out toward the airport you can find great roads to ride on. KY taxes are higher; your car insurance will be higher. However, there are lots of companies getting tax breaks to move into Northern KY. This move would put you right on 275 to get to Lawrenceburg. Its a growing area.

If you want to live in Cincinnati, I would recommend the east side – Anderson is off of 275 and you could easily get to lawrenceburg from there without much traffic. In Anderson you can easily access rides out of Milford and Loveland with the cycling group in town (name is escaping me right now) and have easy access to city activities. You would have running trails at Lunken Airport (5.5 miles) and Milford (I think it may even connect in Newtown now). XU swimming is the best and you can easily get there from the Anderson area. If you don’t swim Masters, the Healthplex in Anderson is great for swimming too. Its a really nice club ( I miss it).

If you like Thai food, try Bangkok Bistro in Hyde Park – I miss it the most.

Not to thread hijack, but I looked up Indian Hill (from OH, but had never heard of it). Wow! I’ve never seen a suburb of a small midwestern city so expensive. What gives? What’s the $$ in Cincy from? Those aren’t even Chicago prices. Who knew?

Yes - a good bit of money in Indian Hill. Procter and Gamble and a largish regional bank, Fifth Third Bank are both based in Cincinnati. There are a few others, but these are two of the big money-bringers.

On a mostly unrelated note, the movie “Traffic” was filmed in the ridiculously polarized communities of Over the Rhine and Indian Hill, dramatizing both slum and upper-class use of drugs. Not a bad flick, and you can see what Cinci has on both ends.

Yeah, I moved here from Connecticut even and was shocked at the affluence. Lots of old money that is kept pretty secret and in the family. Lots of big corps (GE, P&G, etc.) so the area is about as recession proof as they get with the diversity.

They all live there for the excellent biking no doubt.

I’ve lived in West Chester (north of Cincinnati on the 275 loop) my entire life, its a great place to raise a family with top notch public schools. West Chester has a running store with a tri club, 3 bike shops, LA fitness, Urban Active and the Y to swim and you can be on country roads in 10 minutes for bike rides. I’m biased but it’s home.

Blue Ash and Indian Hills is a good 30 to 40 minute commute. Also the highway exit for Lawrenceburg IN gets pretty jammed and backed up during rush hour. Watch out for the casino traffic as well. There are pockets of the west side of Cincinnati that are very nice from a housing point of view. Northern Kentucky (Villa Hills) is also very nice. Endurance community (single sport or multisport) clusters can be found all around town. Only running seems to be more “East side” focused as far as group runs are concerned. Lots of cycling opportunities in Northern KY and Southest Indiana and Southwest Indiana. In fact, recent local spring series of road races had 3 of 8 races in 30 min drive from Indiana / Ohio border. There is also a Masters swimming program at St Xavier high school about 15 minutes away.
