How many ST’ers are racing in San Diego this Sun? Can’t wait…my early summer A race. I’m not a good hill climber…but I love the whole race course.

I make ride up to watch the pros, I raced it last year with Mike P and company (we won), fun course, but had a tough time and lost a couple minutes (est.) navigating through the crowded course at speed.
i’ll be there…just watching though…good luck in the race
.
I’ll be there racing the whole thing this year. Looking forward to it. Going to be a big weekend, Padres game on Saturday, race Sunday.
I’ll be there. First olympic distance for me, so should be entertaining if nothing else. Hopefully by then this head cold I have will be gone! I’ll be the one everyone is passing on the run! Haven’t checked out the course, how are the hills?

"Haven’t checked out the course, how are the hills? "
Big ring the whole way. Well … I am using a 55T now so maybe not. Really the hills are very short, the 600 ft climb to the Point is very gradual. Hardest part of the course was passing other riders. I forgot to pass on the left sometimes and got yelled at.
Gary, You must be a much better climber than I, BIG RING up CANNON RD? You are correct…the grade isn’t all that steep but for me it is a long uphill grind. There is NO WAY I could even think about the big ring, I am in my 39-25 for a most of the hill and trying not to fall below 12mph and maintaining 85rpm…what am I doing wrong? Once up on top of Point Loma it definatly gets crowded with the some of the slower riders just sort of tooling along in the middle of the road.
…what am I doing wrong? .
Stand the whole way. It’s a big-ring climb for me only if I stand (I’m not nearly as powerful as Gary). I had a great ride there in '02 (9th AG) and I stood on that climb.
I will be there. I haven’t raced since Ralph’s, so it will be good to get back into the swing of things.
Oh, and I will be at the Padres game Sat, as well. Looking forward to seeing Ichiro play.

I’m in. Look for some kind of TCSD marking or a guy on a Red Felt with a Renn Disk.
I’d love to get to 12mph at 85rpm…just started working on climbing out of the saddle, so looks like you will pass me on the bike instead of the run! Guess I need to do some more hill repeats over at Torrey Pines!!!
How is the road condition out there right now. I plan on driving the course on Saturday…any potholes I should be on the lookout for?
“How is the road condition out there right now”
Just did hill repeats out there last weekend. Climb up Cannon isn’t bad, roadwise. Rough road just as you pass the stoplight at the top, the rest of the road is ok…just don’t get to close to the side, not good.
The road’s mostly okay, the side of the road is a little sketchy in a few places, and there are a few places where the sand is encroaching on the road, but the worst potholes were repaired about 2 months ago. The race course road coming back down from Electron Drive to Canon is a little squirrely - especially at high speed. Should be a fun race!
Yeah I am doing the Olympic as well as my other half Glyn (english muffin) and it should be a great weekend for racing. We both did the race last year…the hills arent that bad. Could be worse and the run is flat and fast so no issues there.
His last race in the 25-29 age group so he is trying for a top 10 finish. Then he has to compete with the big boys:)
I’m still in 25-29 for a few more years.
Good luck to everyone.
Two years ago the 40-44 year olds were racked as far from the swim exit as possible (really long jog)…This is my first year as a 45 year old…so lets hope the race organizers have pitty on us old guys and gives us a break in our transition area location.
I have to agree…would rather have hills on the bike then the run!
Luckily I still have another year in 25-29 before I have to play with the big boys!
I’ll be there in a strictly cheering, support position. Looking forward to meeting and bonding with some more SoCal folks. One more thing to love about the area (as if there is a shortage!).
B
don’t look for that to change Fred. that is one of the things I don’t like about this race, very unfair transition set up negates really being able to compare times overall. The younger age groups gain as much as 2 - 3 minutes overall in favorable transition placement.
For all of you 40+ guys, my girlfriend will be standing at the bike to run exit to trip anyone that comes out ahead of me, just to sort of even out the playing field with my bum knee and all that includes you Bryd even though you’re still in the kid’s division
Hmmm…a couple things, now that I know who HeyB is, you better watch yourself around me, you know us Slowtwitchers like to talk…
And I’m betting on a faster bike split than you, but you’ll kill me on the run!!
“BIG RING up CANNON RD?”
Yes, in a 53 or 54.
Hammer it, it’s only 30k!
