San Diego cycling routes

I’ll be visiting San Diego for a few days and looking for some good training routes. I’m going to have to start all my rides right near here: http://tinyurl.com/ybvy4k
I found a couple cue sheets online at http://www.sandiegotandem.org/routes.html
If you know anything about the area and have general good recommendations, directions to go, etc - I’d really appreciate it.
thanks,
tom

Thanks Gary. And bump… thanks.

A lot of good routes here and most have maps. Most of these rides are within 10-20 miles of where you are staying.

There is a bike path that runs down the 56/ted williams that can get you to el camino and/or to the coast which is always great riding. Access to the bike path is on the south side of the 56/ted williams at black mountain. you can ride that to the coast or you can get off on camino del sur and take that to san dieguito road which is a nice area to ride as well. San dieguito road will put you out out near the coast as well and you can jump onto el camino or get to the old coast highway as well.

Come out on the lunch time hammer ride with us on Tue and Thursday from the Performance Bike shop in Sorrento. Ride starts at 12:05pm. You can get there riding west on 56 bike path.

Hard, fast, fun. About 20 miles if you start at the shop with a group of about 15+ (out and back) — most of us ride to the start for more miles.

If you want more after that we can show you where to go afterwards.

EDIT:
One rule:

  1. It’s a no wait ride — meaning if you get dropped or have a mechanical issue, you are on your own. Lunch time is short (sorry).

However, there are three regroup points.

These rides all start at Nytro in encinitas, but will give you some good ideas of where to ride.

thanks shannonwo - is the bike path largely uninterrupted/continuous, or do you have to stop to cross streets a lot?

the bikepath is separate from the highway but there are some roads that intersect the bike path that you may have to stop at. definately safe but if you were to jump off on any of the intersecting roads such as camino del sur- each of them have bike lanes. One of the beauties of san diego is that many roads have bike lanes.

Hope that helps.

You’re starting location is about 4 miles from where I live. If you want to do something long, I’d encourage you to go East-if you’re really feeling aggressive, to the top of Palomar and back is about 90 miles from where you are starting. There are also some good 60 milers with some climbing if you take Carmel Mountain Road to Twin Peaks (Rt) to Pomerado (left) across the freeway to Via Rancho (Rt), Quick Right and then Left on Citrus to Bear Valley (Rt), Right on Lake Wolford-there are multiple routes from there, but taking woods valley (left) to Valley Center (Right) to Lilac (Left) over to 395 and back though Escondido. There are many variations on this. I’d say if you want a longer ride with some climbing, head East, otherwise, take the 56 bike path to the coast and cruise around there.

You can also do a flatter 50 miler taking the 56 to the coast, heading north until Palomar airport road (Right), Right again on Melrose, working your way through Elfin forest, to Via Rancho (this is a bit tricky), Across the Freeway to Pomerado, south to Twin peaks, and then Left on Carmel Moutain.

That should give you enough to be dangerous. If you can give some more specifics on what you are looking for, I can give a bit more color.

This is also a good site
