Salt water pools - Opinions

Are their any real negatives to training in a salt water pool when compared to the standard chlorine type?

I’m looking at a new club to train at, their pool is a salt water pool. Never done any training in that type of pool. I’m used to the standard chlorine type. Did a quick search of the forums and didn’t really find much regarding salt water pools.

It’s quite the opposite, all positives to train in a salt water pool…And a ton of positives for the pool owners too…I own one, so I have first hand knowledge of training in the tow types…

I first encountered one at a hotel this winter. Only negative I saw was the taste of the water. I thought it was sweat at first. My guess is you would be a little more bouyant in it.

I think it’s better for your hair and skin as well as the environment…and it’s less expensive.

My son, brand new little kid swimmer, swallowed some as you’d expect and it caused him to vomit. Chlorine might have done the same, don’t know.

It’s more like swimming in the ocean!

no negatives that i can imagine…all positive.
and the buoyancy diffence would be microscopic. the salinity of a pool is no where near the ocean (can’t remember the
numbers…they’re on the wall at the saltwater pool i swim at).

I joined my current club because of the salt water pool.

In my experience, salt does a lot less damage to my swim gear, MUCH less damage to my hair and skin, and I don’t feel weird when I get out.

IMO- Chlorine is worse on most every level.

I used to manage a large pool and I came to really dislike the after-effects of the chemicals.

Salt water pools vs chlorine are WAY better!

Your suits will last longer

It’s better for your skin, hair and eyes

You don’t smell like chlorine all the time

If you swim with your mouth open, you don’t need gatorade :stuck_out_tongue:

The pool I swim in is a mix of salt and chlorine. I like it. Not so salty that it tastes bad, not so chorine-y that I smell bad all day (although I notice the chlorine smell the first time I break a sweat after a swim).

Well you guys pretty much sold me. So, looks like I’m off to a new club. (Love these forums)

You should ask about clinchers vs tubulars and see if you get such one sided answers.

Maybe it’s the particular pool that I swim at, but I really don’t like it. The taste is obnoxious, and it’s been worse on my hair than the chlorine pool I swam in previously. I’d try it out for a couple of weeks before committing.

Ultimately, though, I’d be more concerned about the number of lanes, how crowded it is, hours of operation, etc.

Agree with all the positives mentioned so far…note however that some (most?) public SW pools are also lightly chlorinated.

Possible negative: I’ve recently started losing arm and leg hair at a pretty rapid rate. Seems to be breaking off rather than falling out. No noticeable loss on the head, but it has lightened up quite a bit.

I’d be very interested to hear if anybody else has had this issue. Cant find any good info elsewhere. My pool definitely has salt and other chemicals in it. I’ve been swimming there for 2+ years w/o issues, but I have increased the time I spend there a little recently. They do seem to be farting around with the solution all the time. Thanks.

The only negative that I have found is that the salt hurts my sinus cavitiy - I always let a bit of water up my nose when doing flip turns.
