I’ve noticed many people on ST using salt. Do you use a tablet, if so which one? when do you take it-during the bike, run, both? I would guess that the amount one takes is very individualized.
At the moment, i have 338mg in each serving of Infinit and i need a bit more. Any help is most appreciated-thanks
I use Suceed caps in racing and training and put addional salt on just about everything I eat during the day. Well, ok, not the fruit at breakfast, but you know what I mean. I also drink almost 110 ounces of water per day as well, so though I am taking in more salt, I am still staying well hydrated.
I use Lava salts. I am a heavy “salter” so the amount changes depending on how hot and humid its going to be. I generally start out with the manufacturer recommends, then add a little or back off a little. Lava Salts comes in a capsule which I open when adding to my fluids. 5 capsules in a 70 oz. camelbak, for a really hot humid 50 mile riding day, is about right for me. I am adding this to a 50% mix of gatorade BTW.
I use thermolyte tabs on long bikes and long runs if it’s warmer than about 85F or so. Typically I would take 2 per hour but have gone up to 5-6 per hour.
Infinit salty formula plus power gel with 4X sodium or e-gels work and you get your calories without needing to carry or take salt tabs. Just make sure you take the gels with water, not with your salty Infinit.
Similar to **SProboscis **, I add lava salts to my liquids. THe capsules are easy to open and pour into my water bottles on the bike or camelbak on the run.
I generally only use them during longer training (over an hour), and use 2 / hour if it’s going to be hot and humid…which is almost always in N. Fla in the summer…
I did notice that perpetuem does have some electorlytes and suggests using less salts, although I’ve continued adding 2 capsules / hour.
It is so user specific....On that bike at IMLP I used the standard Infinit Ironman distance formula and it worked out to be 488mg/hour I was getting in which I supplemented with another Lava Salt pill every hour so 255mg...so something like 740mg/hour.
On a run, I basically was sweating salt which was OK (I think…I was really covered with the stuff) but I wasn’t replacing it like I should have been and I ran into some trouble. I started banging down Lava Salt at every other aid station (1 here, 2 there) and “kinda” got back on track…
It seems like alot when I do the math, but maybe that is what I need.
I like to err on the high side with salt pills though, figuring if I don’t have any digestive problems from them and I’m getting clear water in at the same time (I always take salt with a good cup or two of water) then my kidneys will take care of it if it too much.
Thoughts?..hope this helps
Oh yeah, I’m not taking other electrolytes into account here…I’m not sure what effect potassium, magnesium had in this scenario…
BTW…I thought of doing a custom Infinit formula with more salt, but I was worried about palatability issues. I could taste the salt in it since I was using a concentrated formula.
thanks all for the help-Jeesh-it sounds like a whole other science!
science yeah, but ultimately you have to try it. A single Endurolyte makes me want to barf. Thermolyte, no problem. Elete Water, no problem. Table salt, puke. And so on
nice thing about goody bags, lots of options to experiment with
