Saddle sores (2)

Not a comfortable subject. I keep getting one or two right at the junction of my leg and hip socket. Wondering if my seat angle off from center may have anything to do with this. Thoughts? And suggestions on the fastest way to get rid of them? I want to do a long ride tomorrow, but at this rate, it hurts like H-E-double hockey sticks.

thanks, Lamar

I don’t know how much of a factor seat angle is. I would think that if sores are to happen, they’re just going to happen, no matter what your seat position, but I could be wrong. I don’t think you’re going to get rid of them by tomorrow, but I usually find that the pain is most intense in the first half hour or so, then it just recedes to kind of a dull, tolerable soreness.

I usually get them at the beginning of the season too. Rub some chamois cream into your chamois to soften it up. When you’re done and after you’ve showered and dried off, pat a generous amount of baby powder in the area. I don’t know why (perhaps because it keeps me dry and lessens the rubbing against my underwear), but this helps me heal.

I’m the same. I suffer because of a minor leg length discrepancy causing more friction on the shorter leg side (I want to get Tom D to look at this set up issue when i go stateside soon). Talc and anti bacterial cream makes for a fast recvovery.

Use some Assos Chamois Cream. LA’s personal favorite for staying saddle sore free. Best prices on the web at www.ltcycles.com

Gives a nice tingling feeling each time you apply to your chamois. Highly recommended.

Thanks all. TJ, I have tried that stuff, but don’t quite understand why (when cycling) anyone would want a burning sensation in their crotch. Notice I limited this to cycling, as I make no assumptions or judgments with respect to those who may like that sensation at some other times.

But the couple of times I tried it, I thought I was going to scream. Is there anything comparable that isn’t a menthol tye product?

Thanks again for the responses

Lamar,

I like the numbing feeling in my crotch because it keeps my mind off my arse hurting. You can use regular chamois butter from a hardware store, basically anything with anti-bacterial properties that will also prevent chaffing by acting as a lubricant.

If you enjoy numbing feelings in your crotch at other times I would recommend using KY warming liquid, creates a gentle warming sensation on contact. You can always opt for the altoids too.

Make sure your shorts fit tight. A lot of folks wear shorts that are too big, which allows them to move around on you and chaffe. Also, make sure you change out of your bike shorts as soon as possible after the ride. Sitting around with a chamois full of butt sweat pressing against your skin is a sure fire was of getting a saddle sore. Do these two things and you’ll hardly ever need chamios butter.

Coat the area with body glide to reduce friction. wash up good when you get done.
