Sad news

Anyone who has visited Tom D’s site, www.bikesportmichigan.com has seen the link for the missing college student Dru Sjodin. Sadly Dru’s body was found this week end in Minnesota.

There are a lot of sick people in this world, make sure you take the time to hug the ones you love. Parents if you have children, especially girls, about to go off to college. The best going away present you can give them is a personal safety and awareness/self defense course. Having taught several of these courses, the most common remark from students is “I never really thought about that” in this day and age that is not an option. Simply paying atttention to your surroundings is probably the most important lesson.

If anyone has any questions on where to go for more information on personal safety PM me.

Yeah, i go to JHU, and we just had a student murdered, in what appears to be a botched home burglary. I couldnt imagine what his parents must be going through.

JHU as in Johns Hopkins University? I went there - when was the murder?? We had a student murdered on campus (in 1996) by another student over some girl - my roommate witnessed the whole thing. Very scary stuff. Be safe! Baltimore isn’t always the safest city.

yeah, Johns Hopkins. The attack happened friday night, and he died early Sunday:

what isnt mentioned is that this is the 3rd stabbing in a little over 6 weeks (but to be fair, only the 3rd since ive been here), one of them was a towson student at RoFo, and another hopkins student at RoFo (one of my friends, just slashed with a switchblade, nothing serious). Thank God im graduating in one month, and am off to Gainesville…

Having just become a father to a daughter almost 17 months ago, this story has hit home just a little bit more than it would of in the past. I sure hope they BBQ this bastard who did this. What a sick, sick world we live in.

“especially girls, about to go off to college.”

My daughter just finished her first year living in a city away from home. She’s mature and street smart, but like any parent, I worry all the time.

My brother, as well as several of my friends, go to UND and knew Dru; none of them have anything but good to say about her. I often ride from my parents’ house north of Fargo to my brother’s in Grand Forks, going through Crookston near the ditch where they found her body. If I ride that way again it won’t be the same.

Maybe the best we can do is ride well and live the best that we can, remembering our own mortality.

She’s mature and street smart

That will go a long way, add a healthy dose of self confidence and she should be fine. Predators don’t want to have to fight for their prey, the more confident you are the more likely they will look else where.

Sorry to hear about this.

They finally convicted the Rapist/murderer of a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago. She was killed many years ago, but the police never gave up, and eventually his (the killer’s) DNA popped up in another investigation in another city.

Mia’s death was the catalyst for the creation of a women’s self defense program; a sad, but important legacy.

Too many crazies out there.

A friend of mine here in Taipei told me the sad news of the recent death of a really bright young man in Los Angeles of multiple gunshot wounds. He was a college student at USC, originally from Hawaii, who had studied Mandarin here in Taiwan and really had a knack for language and culture. He was supposed to return to Taiwan for a special language program after graduating, but he was killed while making a run to the store for friends after attending a school function.

He’d mentioned to my friend that he lived in one of the worst neighborhoods in LA. It’s a shame he was right. The mrder is unsolved and there don’t seem to be any clues or witnesses coming forth.

That’s another thing that always scares me. College students want out of the dorms as fast as they can. Unfortunantly they can usually only afford to live in less than safe neighborhoods. If they knew what we did they would stay in the dorms.
