S & S couplings

Hello,

I recently bought an S & S coupled bike frame. Unfortunately it didn’t come with the wrench for the couplings. I know I can buy one from the company, but does any one know what else might work?

I am sure you could find a spanner wrench to fit,but if it did not fit just right it might slip and mess up the finish on the couplers,i would go with the correct wrench from them,if you find it really costly email me and i can give you a few numbers where you can find one.Randall P.S, you could have a good machinist make one also:)

We build quite a few coupling bikes and thus I know that the couplers are very expensive. It would be a shame and quite costly to mess them up with a tool “that seems to work kind of.” Because you already made the investing in the bike, it is well worth to get the matching tool.

No problem, they are actually quite cheap (the wrenches, that is). I was just wondering if they were exactly the same as an older BB spanner or something similar.

What tri bikes can you build with the couplings? How much does it add to the price, weight? Can you add then to an existing bike? How much would that cost? Can you only put them on titanium bikes? Can you then fit the bike in one suitcase?

Thanks. I was browsing the rooworld site for these questions and didn’t see anything at all addressed other than a photo and that you can do it to the santos.

My bike is a Steve Rex steel cyclocross frame. I bought is used and haven’t tried it yet. As far as your questions for Herbert, typically they can be put on any steel or ti frame which has round tubes for the top tube and downtube. Aluminum and Carbon fiber bikes have been made but are very rare and costly. I believe the steel versions add about a 1/2 lb and cost about $300 - 400 installed, I paid about $400 for the used frame on ebay. They can be retrofitted to an existing frame. I’ve never heard a complaint about the ride. I believe the website is SandSmachine.com . Superdave can also hook you up with a Ritchey frame whcih uses a similar but competing system.
