I was going to reply that there is no such thing as road racing in Southern California. It sucks. They seem to be months apart. Gary apparently beat me to it though, but was a bit more sly. You’ll notice it’s all TT’s, crits, and track events. At this rate I should be a CAT4 in about 3 years…
SoCal in Sept… You gonna pay Ves another visit?
Yeah
SoCal is all about TT and crits, for the most part, unfortunately
and track racing, we have three velodromes!
To upgrade, you have to either:
( I come from a MTB racing background, I was Expert NORBA)*
suffer through crits, and race these road races: San Luis Rey, Boulevard, Devil’s Punch Bowl
join a team (who can help you place) and do stage races (Tour of Temecula, San Dimas, SD Omnium)
travel outside socal
So, if I were Joe, I would hook up with a team asap: http://www.socalcycling.com/socalclubs.asp
I’ve always wondered why folks from SoCal have traveled to do road races up here in NorCal. I’d rather do the crits personally but that’s just my aptitude or lack thereof…

Probably too many racers that have fallen, gotten their implants pushed up into their necks, suffocated, and had their families sue the RD and the city/cities the race was hosted in. Mmmmm, the beauty of living in the land of the free…to sue anybody and anything and probably win.
Actually, I’m sure there is some valid reason, but I don’t know what it is.
got a weeks holiday left and the answer is maybe!
Yikes and here we are in Vancouver area pissed that our RR season is over in July.
So if we do come down any suggestions for group rides that we might be able to pick up?

Swamis, SDBC, Cyclo-Vets have weekly/weekend rides in San Diego
Thanks

traffic lights
Nearest traffic light to me, and the other 50,000 or so people that live up here, is about 15 miles. I know there are plenty of excellent roads that don’t have lights on them because I’m riding them every day. Of course, God forbid, it means you might have to climb a few hills.
it’s just too much work to get volunteers to manage cross streets
crits and TT’s are short and contained, better for spectating too
you need to get a MTB
you would be an expert in three months and get a pro card in one year
no kidding, want to go pro road ? - go MTB then cross over to get a pro USCF card
seriously
I hear I live in about the best place for it too…certainly makes me wonder. I’ve never been on an MTB, how technical is the racing around here?
cool thing is, you are in mountain bike Mecca
Rim Nordic is in your backyard, Snow Summit up the street
Its all won on the climbs, you would smoke them
You can train most of the time on the road, and 1-2 times per week on the MTB, that’s all it takes
WHen I raced NORBA I rode the MTB 3hrs per week
Believe it or not, I was considered a pretty good climber, and look how you smoked me on Palomar
Look out though, after my Death Camp in Dec in Borrego for a week, I will be ready for you

County permits. People like to drive too much. Hard to drive if your roads are closed.
Plus, most people don’t like bike racers vacating bodily wastes on their properties.
Santiago Canyon TT almost was cancelled last season because of permits, or lack thereof
It’s tough to get a RR going in SoCal, unless you have it out in the sticks
