.

which one is this guy? and is “People” your answer to what’s become of “Triathlete”?

I wish those two would go away already. How is that some many people have trained to get there and qualified and he just shows up with his sponsors and pro coaches. IMO this doesn’t do much for the credibility of Ironman. It reminds me of how mountain climbers consider Everest to be a tourist spot because anyone can just pay and go now, no skills or due paying required.

OK does this piss anyone else off or is it just me.

Working to raise funds for the Fireman’s Fighter fund, great go for it, but…

A free slot to KONA for a guy that has never done a tri (maybe I’m wrong)???

That in my mind sucks -

Ive been dabbling in the dark arts, and have learned to predict the future. He will… dnf or go 15+ due to too little base work. IMO to do a full IM you need at least a few years experience and base.

yeah but tell you what, this guy probably won’t work, will train with the pro’s on this, he might do well. It will bring tons of attention to IRONMAN, tons of coverage, maybe it will make people aware of what it takes to do this… Maybe the typical person that usually says" You are doing what???" or what is it again? a swim and a run? will finally get it…You all know what I mean… I still don’t quite agree that because he married the bachelorette, he gets an hawaii spot. geez I’ll be the next bachelorette, you get a husband and a spot for Hawaii:) Oups, I can’t, I am not a US citizen…

well, something tells me he’s not a slowtwitcher (ex-footballer), so his body isnt adapted to it. If he suddenly jumps into 30 hrs/wk of training he will get injured, no matter what. It takes a while for the body to get used to the huge training loads of IM, and i say it takes a few years (at least 1 season b/f starting training) to get the adaption for the 20+ hrs/wk to do well in IM.

I do agree with you on that one… not sure what kind of training he has behind is belt…

I don’t really care that the guy got an ironman slot, it’s not like he took one away from someone else. (To use Demerly-speak, it was a vapor slot, and never really existed in the first place, kinda like the slots they give to big money sponsors) I just don’t understand what it is with reality shows, People Magazine, the ‘E’ - Entertainment Channel, and all the celebrity worship that is so rampant in the US right now. How in the hell can so many people be so intrigued by some Hollywood schmoe’s $200 T-shirt, where they get their dog’s pedicure done, and who they are spilling drinks on in the night club???

Can someone please explain it to me in simple terms and maybe make an analogy that I can understand.

I agree with MArc. Honestly, I could care less bout this crazy cat…In reality he did not earn it so let him live his “pipe dream”.

But, In a way, I am mildly unsettled by this because I can personally name at least 5 of my close friends including myself (age group 25-29) that have put in huge commitments toward training and racing, place or podium in most if not all races, earned sponsorships and can run circles around this Ryan dude but have still have been unable to “qualify” for ironman. So that said, for this guy to just get up and go is wrong.

So let him go there and dnf.

Marisol, how are you feeling? Wasn’t it you that was fighting a cold bug or something…all nervous about loosing fitness…

Graz

wow good memory graz… i am feeling great, much better. I did a 4 hours brick on saturday and 22 miles run sunday with a 15k race in the middle which I PR in by 4 minutes… I am back with vengeance! Thanks for the concern, it was like I felt like I would never be able to train again:) Now I am still sore form the run but geez, so happy that all this training is paying off. How is your training?

Ahh, who cares? Ryan Sutter is Hot!! He’ll be one fine specimen to watch during the race. I don’t think the men would be complaining if Trista were out there in a skimpy little tri-suit!

He got a spot? how why what the f…geezzz I hate it when crap like that happens…he said sputtering in disbelief!!!..

That is the point, not that it wasn’t really a spot or that he didn’t “take” a spot, the point is that you have people who have devoted years to earn the right to stand at that line and he has been handed the opportunity. In a sport built on determination, discipline, toughness, guts and persistence it is silly for them to just give him the spot with zero racing.

Eric Kapitulik races for a cause but he also races other races and puts in his time it just seems to be an insult to hand out spots like that.

yeah… fun to watch walking on the side of the road in the dark… sniffle, sniffle, smirk…

NYGiants backup QB Jesse Palmer is a Canadian but is the next Bachelor so it appears that non US guys can get on the show too…

As for this Ryan dude getting a spot without qualifying or going through the usual channels, well, this is why the folks at the ITU would argue that Hawaii does not deserve the moniker of World Championships. These type of actions just serve to devalue the effort of all those who tried to qualify through real hard work and some genetic gifts. Please note, that letting Ryan in only devalues the efforts of all us working dudes who qualify or try to. His presence though is huge from a marketing and $$$ perspective. Let’s remember that the WTC is not really running an athletic event. They are runninig a business first that happens to sell athletics as one of their product line. They also sell sponsorships, license their brand to folks like Timex to use on watches, sell charity slots and offer celebrity slots etc etc etc all of which are differnt “products” that helps build their overall brand and revenue. In the case of celebrity spots, one might argue that they are a loss leader as there is a small cost to this but a huge marketing payback. So from that perspective, they are great businessmen, but they suck if you are looking at it as a triathlete who worked to qualify or failed to qualify.

You bet we wouldnt be complaining if Trista was racing in a little suit! I guarantee there would be a lot of pictures of her. I bet Ryan will do much better than most think. My Brother is a fireman, he never works out and is great shape because of all the on the job action. Besides he is active, he skis, ex football player, you know he works out, and is training at high altitude. Why all the jealousy? Its good PR and for a Great cause!

What a shame and insult to those who have tried so hard…so does he become the all-time worst vapor slot? if not, who is? I have my opinion but dont feel like getting flamed for it.
