I am currently running on overpronator shoes. Using Brooks Adrenaline GTS 18, I also liked my Asics GT2000 ones.
I tried many different shoes but can’t run for long on lower, less cushiony shoes. My knees start hurting, especially the right one (meniscus surgery).
Never succeeded in running before last winter, now I can run 15 km’s and building on completing a half marathon this fall or winter.
I was looking to get a “racier” shoe, lighter, with better “spring” than my GTS18. Is this possible ? I know it’s a compromise between cushion and spring…
I’m ready to try another pair as my Brooks are nearing their life end…
Check out Brooks Purecadence if you want the lightest support shoe with low drop. A bit more cushioning but still pretty flat, and my personal favourite, is New Balance Vongo. Light and slightly firmer but with a little bit more of a ramp is Adidas Adizero Tempo Boost.
NOt that I don’t like the idea of going to a lower shoe, but with lower than 10 mm heels I simply can’t sustain the run.
EDIT: When I wrote “heel” I meant drop. I only kept the “drop” number on the shoes when shopping, but can’t really speak about height, I notice now there are pretty cushy shoes with a low drop. That’s complicating things even more for me…
How fast do you run, if you are just building to run 15km, I’m assuming you are not flying on the run, if so, stick with what you have been using as its working for you. If you are running say 4min per K or faster look into a racier shoe like an Adidas Boston of Bike Zoom Fly or something like that.
Have you tried Hoka? I dont like them for my feet but many of my friends have had great success with them.
I’m trying to find a decent pace where I’m at right now. It’s more of a pace my body can endure, and adapt, through that “new” impact sport I’m doing.
So, for now my 10 + km pace is 5:00/km. I can manage 4:30/km for 5 km runs. Working on technique and putting more mileage this year, I’ll join a running group who are doing interval training twice a week. “Running” season will be between now and march. I almost stop running in the summer, focusing more on cycling.
My team’s store has the following brands so it limits the search to these brands: Brooks, Saucony, New Balance, Mizuno ( though I think they stopped selling that brand), On-Running, Inov-8, Icebug.
I have heard some good things coming out of NB with a big range of shoes. Good luck, in my experience I need to get a shoe, do 2 runs, a 5km and then a 10km and I can decide, this has meant I have had to sell a lot of lightly used shoes that were not right for me, but it has lead me to finding the right shoe. Every year I always try a few new models and will make changes to my training and race shoes if I find something new I like better, with technology changes I am always keen try new things and not just sit on what was the best thing for me in the past. I always used to run in Brooks but their whole line up changed about 5 years ago, now i’m into Adidas.
Similar issue here.
What I ended up with was New Balance Beacon wides, and I put in an aftermarket insole with some built in arch and metatarsal support. The Beacon is a very light shoe. Note - I did not like the new version of the Beacon, so I stocked up on the older version, enough to last me a couple years.
I ran Saucony Guide 9, then Guide 10. Both were 8 mm drop. I got 450 miles out of my last pair of 10’s. I just got a pair of Saucony Hurricane iso 4’s for $50 through a sale at Big 5. They are a little heavier but lots of cushion for the training miles. Now I need to find a lighter pair as well for races and sprint training only. Brooks has a running shoes finder on-line that might help you. The Ravenna 10 has a 10 mm drop and 9.4 oz.
I’ve been following this thread as it definitely applies to some issues I have. I’m currently in the kinvara and also run in the Hoka Clifton from time to time but I feel like the Clifton has too much arch support. Is anybody running in any of the on cloud models???

I would take it a step at a time (get the same last shape) and try the Brooks Ravenna; a little less drop, weight, and faster shoe than the Adrenaline yet has plenty of protection. I find it to transition better than the Adrenaline as well as speed picks up.
