Running with IPHONE?

I figure it’s okay as there are no moving parts but is it?

yes…but why would you want to? kind of heavy. buy a shuffle if you want music. IMHO nobody needs a phone on a run…you should be using the time to be without all the crap in your life (and as much as I like to run with music I really think people shouldn’t do that too much either).

They are no good. Once you get to about 4:30km pace or faster for more than 30 minutes or so they tend to freeze - you then have to wait for the battery die before it will unfreeze. I think they must struggle to buffer the shock or something. I agree that spend a little bit of money and get a shuffle or similar - you wont cry when the thing gets caught in a rainstorm and stops working.

I put it in a light ziplock and then throw it into a belkin armband. I need to have a phone with me so this is the best of both worlds. I rarely reach 4:30 pace as well.

I’m on call 24x7 so have to have it with me.

I am also looking at syncing it with WKO+.

So a double use.

Triple if I listen to IMTALK while I run.

I have a pair of the deSoto forza shorts with pockets. I put mine into a ‘snack’ sized ziplock bag and put that into the pocket on my thigh. I don’t notice it.

I carry one every time I run for safety and, depending on where I am, for music. It is big but I don’t give myself another choice. Ziplock and pocket in my shorts or jacket. I also have an armband and small bag that I put around my waist if I don’t have pockets in my clothes.

Buffer the shock? They don’t have a harddrive in them, it’s all NAND flash memory.

Forgot to mention. I’ve dropped my iPhone in my footbath at the spa and PirateGirl dropped hers in her Jamba Juice and they both still work fine.

Fair enough, you sound significantly more informed than me  Any ideas as to why this happens then? Its the same with my ipod, though not the shuffle or the nokia. As I say, it only happens when I run - 4:30ish pace, and not when my lady runs - 5:15ish pace.
It seems to take longer, say 40 minutes before conking out if I have it in a fuel belt pocket behind me, but only 15 or so on my arm.

I dunno??

My brother’s cat peed on his and that broke it. So keep them away from cats.

Yes, mine has been dropped in a smoothie and still works, but not fine. But almost as good as it did before the Acai Smoothie bath…but even before the acai smoothie bath I wouldn’t have said my iPhone works fine. Damn thing sucks.

Not sure the answer to your question, but I do know that you don’t have to wait for the battery to die. Just hard reset it. Hold down the round button and the power button together for about 10 seconds (yeah, it takes awhile) and it will reset the phone. Does not lose any data, it just turns the thing off so it can start again.

Thanks this is what I was really trying to find out.

Jodi,

That’s probably the best thing I’ve ever learned on this site. I hope it works next time mine freezes up. I usually just plug it in and do a complete restore (which takes 3 hours).

Awesome, thanks heaps

Sounds like it might be related to moisture perhaps. There are no moving parts (other than buttons) so shock shouldn’t cause any skipping. Could it be that the volume buttons are accidentally getting pressed or the any of the other buttons?

I have gotten rid of my Garmin and my iPhone is the only thing I use to train now. I use RunKeeper for everything. If I’m going on a long ride and need to keep the wife in the know of where I am; GPSTracker.

Don’t sweat on it, or you will be buying a new one at retail.

once you start sweating, your fingers won’t be able to control the device. this is a serious pain in the ass when working out in even slightly warm temperatures with an iphone/ipod touch. add to this the fact that you have to be able to look at the device in order to control out, and i conclude (based on experience) that these are just about the worst music players for exercise ever made. that said, i do run with mine, but the playlist is preselected and i give up all hope of volume changes or any other kind of modification (even in berlin in the winter). oh, and be sure to lock the screen.
