Running while female

Basically, a lo-fi predator?

Surrey police pose as joggers to catch men harassing women out exercising

This is so important, that policy are now baiting cat callers rather than controlling the rising crime rate.

a cat caller is much more likely to be a criminal…
ie a decent person would not do that.

I don’t think that study is telling women to change their exercise routing in winter, it’s reporting that three quarters of women change their exercise routines in winter

Good point, and I can see it that way now; it depends on how you read “suggested”

It could either be “the study determined …” or “the study recommended …”

The link goes to “determined” thanks for enlightening me

I would be curious if a survey was done for "how many people met their partner after they shouted at them or catcalled them while they were in public"

I can’t imagine it’s a significant number. Perhaps a social media campaign pointing out how pointless/cringe it is.

I want to believe that the majority of men don’t do this. I have never in my life seen a woman in public and thought “I’m going to yell at her and hope she likes it.”

And yet as a husband and father - I know what my wife and even my 11 year old daughter deal with just walking along the road. It’s ridiculous and I wish the US had a different culture.

I don’t think they do it because they think the woman will like it. They do it because they know it will make them uncomfortable. It’s a power thing. Also possible they are just idiots. Or both.

I guess that also makes sense…but also would have never occurred to me.

I pray I’m actually in the majority on this.

It’s “Boys Will Be Boys” bullshit, and until fathers teach their sons not to behave like that (or until sons figure out for themselves that they’re behaving like assholes, and reject that behavior), it’s not going away

And it’s not just the US, either, is it? I’m sure that French, Italian, Spanish, and British men call out women in such ways (well, we know British men do, otherwise there’d be no need for a “task force” to keep an eye on them, right?); they just do it with more style, more panache

As a father - I’m doing my part.

France is terrible. Most women can’t run alone in the larger cities. My wife said the older farmers were the worst (we were very rural).

Or they think it makes them look cool in front of their mates!

Who are ALSO assholes, therefore

And the one who says “Dude, don’t be a dick” is therefore a pussy

I met my wife while out running.
I guess I’m part of the statistic…

Took the XC kids out for a trail run last weekend. One of the younger boys older sisters brought him to the trail and went for a walk on a shorter loop while we ran the big one. As we were finishing the loop, his sister was up ahead wearing headphones and just walking along.

So her little brother ran up quietly behind her and poked her in the back saying boo or something like that. She screamed so loudly and was so terrified. Her brother was pretty shocked too!

I had to explain that’s like the worst possible fear he just exposed her to, which he didn’t really get.

So add, don’t wear noise cancelling headphones, earbuds to the list!

Which leads to “women shouldn’t have to learn to be careful; men need to learn how not to be a threat”

I understand your sentiment, but what you’re saying in actuality is nonsense.
Tell the edge of the cliff not to be threatening. Where one force is greater than the other, there will always be a “threat” in the power imbalance.

If what you’re saying is men need to not act in a such a way that demonstrates an intent to cause harm. Well, ok, I think we can all agree there. But as long as the ability to cause harm exists, the threat exists, doesn’t it?

Yes, that’s what I’m saying

And no one learns to not act in a such a way that demonstrates an intent to cause harm, without being taught/shown how to do so

And since boys learn such things from Dads vs Moms, it’s on Dads to show them the path

Now, to be fair and transparent, I only have a girl, so I taught her long ago that boys can be dangerous, because a lot of them have Dads “who think this shit is fine”
