My wife, in a push to get back into shape after starting a new job 6 months ago, has started running again. She’s drafted me as her rabbit, training partner, and motivational coach — task I love. We run every morning for about 4-5 miles at a steady pace. The pace is a little challenging for her, but slooooow for me. I was suprised to find that running slow leaves my legs just as tired, if not more so, than running fast.
Doin the same with daughter. I just hope
she’ll wait a bit for me when the going gets
though for me. Work on relaxing, minimal
shoes, you’ll get used to it. Enjoy, the
pace needs to be easy for her too.
When the law break in, how you gonna go?
Shot down on the pavement, or waiting on death row?
I have the same situation with my wife at times. I have found that I can use the time to really work on technique. I try and see just how low I can get my heartrate be being as smooth as possible. I like to think it benefits my fast running to get a feel for improved technique while NOT in oxygen debt.

Nine time NYC marathon winner Grete Weitz once said that the toughest marathon she ever ran was the one she did with the late Fred Lebow in 5+ hours.
From what I understand, when you run slower, your stride shortens a bit,and your using slightly diffrent muscles.Thats probably why your feeling a bit fatigued.
Same thing happned to me when I did a fun run with a group of friends.
I was having the same problem running with my wife. One solution I found was to integrate some speedwork into my runs with her. I start out with her at a slow pace to warm up. Then I start doing out and back intervals. I run ahead at interval pace for a few minutes then turn back and rejoin her for my recovery at her pace. I get a few good intervals in and then join her for the cool down. I think she was cool with it because she doesn’t feel like she’s holding me back and I still get to run with her.
By the way are you doing the Las Vegas Century this weekend? It’s a beautiful ride. I think I read that you were kinda disappointed with Vegas. You might be able to see and ride parts of Vegas you haven’t seen yet. You’re welcome to join me and friend for the ride.

Im the slow one with everyone I run with. My fast pace is waaaaaay slow and my slow pace is worse.
I too find running my slow pace to be very hard. I think everyone has a natural speed or rythm for them and anything else hurts. Bugger.
I once went for a run with a friend. He nearly broke 4 min mile in his youth and still routinely does sub 15 min 5k’s (in du’s and tris!) at about age 38. I’ve never managed sub 6 min mile in my life (that I can remember). He was beaten up for days after doing a 7km run with me once. I hammered it at 175-180BPM while he flitted along and didn’t even break a sweat. Genes.
Everything I read not says that we don’t do enought of those long slow miles. The Kenyans say that we go too fast on our slow days and too slow on our fast days.
I paced a pace this weekend at the Chicago Marathon that is about 1:40 slower than my typical training pace and I was completely SMOKED when I finished. I have never felt so blasted after a run. I figured it would be like a charity run but I think just being out there for so much longer really killed me. The last 4 miles were mentally VERY difficult to keep pace. I am just a little stiff today but I don’t have that SORE muscle feeling you get when you really push it hard. So I really have to give respect to the troopers out there for 5+ hours. Maybe this will give me incentive to run faster…gets the pain over faster.
Blas – I am planning on doing the Las Vegas Century this weekend. Hope to see you there. My wife and I are pretty disappointed with Vegas … in fact, my wife just took a job in Colorado (with the Colo. State Univ. Vet School in Fort Collins). We will be moving next summer. I think we’re going to Blue Man for my birthday in a few weeks … any suggestions for good seats?
Take care,
Jason
Hey Sorry to hear about your bad experience with Vegas. I kinda have a love/hate relationship with it. So let me know when your going to Blue Man. I may be able to help you out. So on another topic, is your wife a vet? I have dog that has been recently diagnosed with Cancer and we are doing everything we can to help her. We’ve been seeing an oncologist who comes in to Vegas once a month and we’ve been talking to some people from a University in Colorado. Maybe it’s the same one. Does your wife know anything about gene therapy or clinical trials for canine cancer? Any help would be appreciated.
Also, I’m not sure if we’ve met. I know there are a couple of guys named Jason I’ve ridden with but not sure if it was you. Do you work out with the tri club or do the carina homes training rides?
We’ve met. I work out with the Tri club … I’m the guy who saw you perform in Kansas in your previous life, we talked at one of the duthalon workouts I think.
My wife is a vet, and one of her areas of interest is cancer/oncology. You are speaking with Colorado State University in Fort Collins. They have the best Veterinary Cancer center in the country.
If you want, I can talk to my wife for you, or have her call you. Give me some details about your dog’s condition (type of cancer, tumor grade, treatment protocols etc), and I’ll pass it along.
