Running shoes for Clyde types

I’m kinda heavyish 185-190. Not quite clyde but close. I would like to know if anyone has any opionons on running shoes (which are better for heavier runners). I recently switched to a shoe that was designed for heavier runners (Asics DS Trainer) because I was wearing out my others way too fast. I was told by the expert at the LRS that the new shoes were designed to last longer and that they were neutral (which is what I wear normally). After the first 2 weeks of running in these shoes I developed shin splints. I have never had shin splints before. I tried switch to another heavy guy neutral shoe and the same result (Brooks ??? way heavy though). I am inclined to go back to my old shoe Nike Triaxx (if they still make them). I have also run with Asics (Verdict DS) without any problems, but they changed these shoes from a neutral to more inside support.

Any ideas?

I am Clyde, 210ish. I wear NB 1220’s, but think they now changed to 1221’s. They are stability shoes made for heavier runner. Ive tried everything and these are only ones that work for me. I thinks Brooks makes the Beast for heavier runners. Try to figure out what kind of shoes you need, stability, cushion, etc… and then go to good shop that will watch you run and really try to get you fitted well. Once you find a pair that works, dont switch.

Have you seen the Nike Shox TL? Supposedly it is very comfy for bigger guys. Also, mucho pricey. About $150, which is ridiculous for a product they are paying some poor Chinese to make for a couple of bucks. Think of it as a donation to Tiger Woods.

I’ve used Asics Gel Kayono for years, recently switched to Asics 2090 to save a few $$$, but I’ve worn those out pretty quick. I’m going back to the Kayono, which provide plenty of support and good cushion. I presently weigh 200lsbs.

I’m going out for a 15 miler right now and that’s what I have on my feet. I’m 180 and still love them for the cushioning even though I hate all the motion control.

I’m on Asics Gel Kayano’s too. I weight in at 200lbs +/-. I have used this brand/model for about 4 years.

I’ve run in the Saucony Grid Web since 2001. Wintertime/early spring I’m usually pushing 188/190 lbs., but typically get down to 175/180 right before an IM. Sucks that they don’t make it anymore and I’m down to my last pair. Saucony says their 3D Grid Triumph is the replacement for the Web. Haven’t tired it out yet.

First, the DS Trainer is NOT for heavier runners. In fact, it is just the opposite. It is a performance trainer (w/ a medial post) that is not terribly meaty.

I have used Asics between 220 lbs and my present 200 lbs. I run in the Kayano. If you underpronate and want pure cushion shoe w/o stability, then the Asics Nimbus is a good shoe - but it depends on your running stayle and fit ultimately.

Shoes “built for heavy runners” will have either more durability in the sole/midsole, or more medial support since heavier runners tend to pronate more (to the point of needing motion control features), or both.

For years, I ran in neutral shoes and thought that was what I needed until I went to someone who knew what they were doing. The Kayanos are great for me. The 2090’s are just as good but don’t last quite as long (but cost 30 bucks less).

I would go to a different store, or at least a different salesperson. That person who sold you the DS Trainers led you down the wrong path.

I have been using the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 4 for over a year and have no problems. My weight has been anywhere from 200 - 220+. Good comfort and durability.

Last year, a running store put me in Saucony Grid Hurricane V. I love these shoes! Very roomy toebox. This year, I bought the Saucony Fastwitch for racing. Finally, my running has started to show improvement.

Rusty Tx-If you get the chance, come down to Austin and go to Run-Tex. They are the best at fitting running shoes. The owner, Paul Carroza, fitted me in the Kayono’s years ago, after having me run in about 15 different pairs of shoes. You might find a trip to Austin worth your time if you can run without injury.

I always wore mc or stability shoes due to weight breaking stuff down. Was at Fleet Foot in Bozeman, and for the first time had my run filmed. Was put in a pair of Aisics empires. Only can buy them in certain stores(why ? don’t know)Sweet cushion shoe. I am 187.

I weigh about 210lbs and like Saucony Grid Stabils (I have 4 or 5 pairs - various ages). I have also had good luck with Asics MC until they seemingly changed the fit/shape.

Never heard of them. Are they built like the Empire State Building?

I might do just that. The stores here in Ft. Worth are good but not great and there selection I’ve discovered is pretty light.

This is all great stuff. At least I can go into a store with a few option in mind.

Thanks

Seems like it. They are cushion shoes. Always thought I needed control or stability. Why only specialty shops have them…? I do not know. I have not had a pair of shoes that fit and felt like these in at least 5 yrs.

Try Vitruvianrunning.com. they arenn’t speicifically for Clydes, but are supposed to last well.

I am 6’2, 180 lbs and have used the DS trainers as a good 1/2 marathon/marathon race shoe, not as an everyday trainer. I, too, have had good look with the Kayanos. However, Asics can’t seem to keep their designer hands off of them (the Nike syndrome) and they keep changing, not always for the better. So now, give my Mizuno Creation’s and keep them coming.
