Running Shimano cassette with campy der?

Is it possible to run wheels with Shimano cassettes in a campy drivetrain? I know about that widget thingy, but thought that it was for running campy shifters with a shimano der.

I have one bike that is all Shimano 9 (tri) and one that is Campy 10 (road) and I’m trying to figure out the easiest was to be able to swap wheels betreen them so I don’t need two sets of training wheels (currently have one set of shimano and one trashed set of campy).

any thoughts?

Yes, you can … all you need is to get the American Classic 10 speed cassette will fit the splines of you Shimano Wheels and allow use with any **Campagnolo 10 speed **group.

.

First of all, just try it. My undertanding is that Shimano 9 & Campy 10 spacing is close enough that it works quite well.

If you’re not satisfied with that get the appropriate Shiftmate. I’ve used a Shiftmate on one of my bikes for the last month and I don’t think you give up anything performance wise by doing so, it works perfectly and for about $30 it’s a nice cheap solution. There are a few different models so just make sure you get the right one. Most people I’ve talked to feel the shiftmate works better than the conversion cassettes.

best of luck

After I posted my reply I remembered reading this Zinn Q & A recently on Velonews. I thought it might help you with your question:

9-speed Shimano cogs, 10-speed Campy drivetrain
Dear Lennard,
For years I have been using 9-speed Shimano cogsets with Campy shifters. I have six bicycles set up that way, and an equal number of additional wheelsets with Shimano cogsets. I switch wheels all the time and have no problem. In fact, I own no wheels with Campy cogsets, and I do not use conversion kits for any of the wheels. I race on these bicycles, and they perform excellently with that set up, and shift flawlessly. Since the 9-speed works so well, I assumed that 10-speed would work even better as there would seem to be even less room for variation between cogsets. I do not understand why that would not be the case. Of course, I was told that the 9-speed switch would not work before I did it six times.

Dear George,
Your setup should work fine as long as you stick with 9-speed Shimano cogsets with your 10-speed Campagnolo drivetrain. That is the fix that the neutral support teams initially used when Campy 10-speed first came out, because the spacing between cogs on a Shimano 9-speed system is so close to that of a Campy 10-speed system. However, I am quite sure that a Shimano 10-speed cogset will not work with a stock Campy 10-speed system, because the spacing between cogs is so much narrower. Now, you may be able to get the derailleur to move less far with each shift by clamping the cable on the opposite side of the cable-fixing bolt on the rear derailleur, but it of course would then no longer work with your 9-speed Shimano cogs.

I’m running a current generation Campy Record 10 drivetrain with a Shimano DA 10 cassette. Shifts perfectly.

I have 4 full Campy bikes, and 8 sets of wheels. 3 of those wheels, including my HED disc(race wheel) are Shimano. I lucked out and my Shimano 10 cassette/Campy 10 drivetrain shifts flawlessly with this combo. Until last year, my pit wheels for crits were Shimano 9 cassette, which also shifted great. I do have one set that acts funny to the point of getting the Jtek shiftmate.

So, mount the wheel and try it first. If it works great. If not, try some adjuting to find a sweet spot between the two. Chances are you will get it to work fine. Even more so with a Campy 10 drive and Shimano 9 cassette.

My campy wheels shift better on a Shimano drivetrain than the Shimano cassette does! Haven’t tried running the Shimano wheels on my Campy drivetrain because that would just be wrong.
