Running Sandals such as Bite: Anyone every actually run in these?

Tom…

A patient gave me a pair of Salomans that can be used in water and on land. I liked them because they had vents, light, had holes (to let water out) and had an adjustable ankle strap, and then a pull thingie so that you didn’t have to tie your shoes (and better than the regular laces like yankz, ect).

I ran for 30 miles in them from around mile 130-160 (? maybe earlier maybe later but definately in the triple digit area) in November at the Deca. I wore them because my ankle was ripped open and I needed the flexability to adjust the ankle strap. I argued with my sister when I took them off to put on regular running shoes. She was happy at the clip I was running (around 12 min miles at that point–which was MOVING!) and was concerned that once I put on tight/non breathable shoes that my feet would swell and I would be miserable. Well, I was miserable, but that had nothing to do with the shoe change  I did go faster once I put on the more stable shoes, however found myself having to change out my socks more often bc I wasn’t wearing socks with the Salomans. The traction is really good on them, and I have no fear of walking on anything in them. Even when I walked through the dusty/overgrown camp site, I never had a problem with stuff getting trapped inside the shoe.

I still have them in my car for impromptu runs. LOVE them, and wouldn’t think twice about running in them. They go with me to every race from here on out. Would I use them as my main shoe in a shorter race? Hmmm not sure. I think my biggest concern would be too much water getting into them.

In ultrarunning, MANY runners actually wear the running shoes/sandals, and even barefoot. I think I will still with my Montrails for the trail, and the Salomans for emergencies.
