Apparently, we’re a very smart lot.
As far as the general population, I have no doubt exercise enhances your mental performance. Although they quoted me in the article, I may be an aberration ![]()
I do seem to recall that when I was in University that the Cross-Country team had the highest average GPA of all the varsity teams. I don’t want to draw any sterotypes here, but it always seemed to be an endurance sports athlete( runner, swimmer, xc-skier) who won the award each year for the varsity athlete with the highest GPA.

Steve,
I believe many times cross country teams have the highest (or higher) average GPAs. Is that because running makes you smarter or because smarter people run (or a combination)? Or is that because of a post hoc ergo propter hoc logical fallacy?
No question fitness gives you more energy so you get more done. Although fitness maybe doesn’t (maybe does too) result in a higher IQ, it certainly seems to make us perform better mentally and make us more mentally agile.
If that were true, then why all the questions posted on this board? Oh wait, they said running.
Is it true that you have to be gay to subscribe to Men’s Health?
BTW, I’ve also heard that gays are smarter than heteros. So gay runners rule!
I’ve theorized that most individual sports such as running, swimming, etc. requires a level of self-discipline and self-esteem that translates to many other areas of life, such as academics. As an Academic Advisor at several Universities, former swimmer and active runner, I have seen these sports excel in academics more so than team sports (not to say they don’t have students that excel academically also). Just my unscientific observations.

Oh yeah? Then how come I can’t count the 12.5 laps of a 5K on the track? Somewhere during lap three my mind goes blank, and it’s all I can do to focus on the pain.
And don’t even ask me to count swim laps.
Yes, but according to something I read yesterday in the NYT, cycling is making us impotent.
Hell of a trade-off.
This only goes to show that triathletes don’t run enough.
