Running in Punta Canata, Dominican Rep

I am going for the first time to the Dominican and plan to continue my training plan for a marathon. Does anyone have advice on :

  1. What to drink, is the water from the hotel safe ?
  2. What to eat ei banana or should I bring gels from home ?

I do sweat a lot and in the high heat and humidity I will need at least a litre of fluid every 45 min

The resorts have plenty of water and food, if you want gel’s bring your own. The beach is long and a lot, but not all of it, is pretty good for running but a long run is tough to do because you run out of beach. Watch out the bus window on the way from the airport and that will probably discourage you from running on the roads. I always made the vaction a recovery week and was satisfied with a few short runs and a lot of lying around.

I just got back from Puerto Plata so have a few thoughts.

You can only drink the bottled water in the Dominican unless your hotel has a purification system but they are few and far between. You will need to bring whatever drink mix you want to use as you will not find many places or at least I didn’t that sold any type of sport drink. The hotels tend to have bottled water in the rooms and near the bars. Our hotel provided a 4L jug which they replaced as often as we finished it.

You will also not find any gels there so bring what you need. I say train with what you plan on racing with.

If you are coming from somewhere cold (which I am guessing you are) you will sweat a whole lot more than normal as your body adapts so bring a bit more fluids with you than you normally would for the first few runs. Don’t forget your body glide:)

I ran most mornings starting between 7 - 7:30 and it was mid 70s and beautiful.
