Running in Myrtle Beach, SC

I am going to be in Myrtle Beach, SC next Thursday through Sunday. Since I won’t have my bike, I plan on doing 3 runs over the course of my stay. A short 45 minute run on Thursday morning, a 30 minute hard run on Saturday morning and an hour run on Sunday morning. I am staying at Wild Wing. Any input would be appreciated. Also, I want to take my dad out to a nice dinner one night since he is springing for the trip (Father Son Golf Tournament). Any restaurant suggestions would be appreciated as well.

Jeff

We always seem to have planning conferences there for work, so I am somewhat familiar with training there.

As far as running goes, I usually run on the beach in the morning

As far as running goes, I usually run on the beach and turn around and follow one of the streets that follow the coast. Make sure to do your running in the morning, while all the party folks are sleeping off their drunks. It’s probably better off you don’t have a bike, because traffic there is not bike friendly. Most of the Ohio rednecks on vacation will run your ass off the road (I’m a rural Ohio native so I know the species well).

As far as restaurants, I never miss eating at Throroughbreds when I am in that neck of the world.

Run on the beach near low tide.
There is a ton of places to eat. I like a bunch of places at Barefoot Landing, and if you like seafood I would say check out Captain George’s.

Up and down the street closest to the beach. There’s really nothing else out there.

I usually don’t recommend running on the beach, but a little out and back each run won’t hurt. Besides, there is often some very good scenery out there (wink wink).

So, I’ll need to drive from Wild Wing down to the beach for my run in the mornings, then drive back to get ready for the day? Wild Wing looks inland to me.

The beach there is pretty wide and doesn’t have a huge slope to it (like NJ beaches do), so running on them is nice, especially at low tide. I did a couple of 1:30 runs on the beach last time I was there.

I was there over the spring break a few years ago. I did a few runs on the beach (it was fairly hard packed sand) and one or two through the main roads checking out the touristy area (go early in the morning or it will be crowded). I think that there is a university there with a pool that you may be able to get access to if you’re interested in doing a swim workout.

Why no beach runs?

Sorry for the late reply.

No beach runs because:

  1. Running for long periods of time on a sloped surface (like several miles in one direction on the beach) can cause knee and IT band problems.

  2. Running in soft sand puts a lot of stress on the achilies tendons.

A weekend of it shouldn’t be a problem, but beware if you plan to run really long runs or over longer periods of time (several weeks).

No worries about the late reply, thanks for answering. I asked because I just moved and my new house has very immediate access to a system of trails/ firebreaks that are pretty sandy. Would you train in sand occasionally if you had an A race that had a lot of sand on the run?

To sum it up, any stress has the potential to strengthen you if done to the point where the body can repair itself stronger, or to injure you if taken beyond that point.

Typically running on sand just isn’t really worth the risk because the added improvements don’t amount to a significant benefit to distance running. ie Running on sand makes you better at running on sand. Which, of course, leads into your question. So I’d definitely say “yes,” provided you build up slowly and pay attention to soreness in your knees and achilies tendons.

It’s been a lot of years since I’ve been there and I’m sure they’ve built everywhere, but I started running at Coastal Carolina College…the Chanticleers…whatever the hell that is…but there was tons of dirt roads, which was actually hard packed sand around the campus to run on. Also, we ran all over the golf courses around there with no problem at all. Apologies, but I cannot remember the names of any of them. It has been a long time. It’s in Conway, which you will probably drive through on your way to MB. E-mail Alan Connie (the women’s coach) and see where he sends his runners. He’s a super nice guy and has been in the area for a long, long time.
