Running in compression shorts?

I have my first 1/2 ironman coming up next Sunday (Ironman China 70.3). In my training have come to the (painful!) conclusion that my tri shorts do not have enough padding for the bike leg so am going to use my regular bike shorts for that leg and then change in T2 - With all the issues of running of the bike, etc, would it be advisable to run in compression shorts from the perspectives of

  1. Effectiveness in helping prevent cramp
  2. support for “equipment”
  3. Fashion

Would appreciate any feedback!

Doing the run in the bike shorts will probably be faster than taking the time to change in T2.

Many trishorts have as much compression as “compression shorts.” I race in some older De Sotos that use Power Lycra for compression (the newer ones have De Soto’s own compression fabric).

The problem may well be friction, not padding. Two recommendations:

-Wear a speedo under the trishorts, so the two layers can slide on each other.
-Use chamois cream

Final notes:

-There are no equipment support issues; even running shorts provide an adequate home.
-From a fashion standpoint, anything with an underwear-style waistband looks noob.
-Many compression shorts are see-through when stretched and/or wet.

Thanks! will revisit the tri-shorts/bike/padding issue this week!

Or, if you’re going to pull off the bike shorts with the compression shorts underneath, just slip on a pair of running shorts.

Your T2 might not be faster, but you’ll be much more comfortable then running 13 in bike shorts. Which to me, would be worth the 30-60 seconds extra.

Oomph! compression shorts work well for the whole race. Subjectively they make my legs feel great. Now I use them for al my runs.

Agree TOTALLY on the oomph…
